Brahman X price penalty

The foot note to the side says Brahman X, is that explaining the lower price because it was a Brahman. If so why the price penalty for brahman X ?

Most feedlots don't like a calf with alot of ear.
They don't do well in cold weather
They don't have a good hide to sell
And some are so nervous they don't gain well and upset the whole pen.

Since there is less competition to get them bought the price is lower.

all of what howdyjabo said is true, but you also have to figure in the lesser quality carcass from brahma x steers, plus the lack of muscling. cold weather doesn't play as much right now as it will later on in the year. Main thing is the carcass and muscling, but the other factors do play into the equation.

Because you are in Florida where it is too darn hot for anything else.
Brahman have attributes that are helpful in hot humid environments which includes much of the gulf coast states.
they can handle the heat, parasite and insect tolerant.
tough cattle for tough environments. They work well in cross breeding systems and when crossed with other breeds they make an animal that can tolerate those conditions.
they do have their place. Just a fact of the business that they will be discounted, but by using them may mean the difference in being able to produce cattle and not producing them.

Good question. Seems to me that report contains other cattle from the local area. If someone else can make these 'other' cattle grow in the heat, why deal with the price of Brahmas ?

Why keep brahmans? Because if you play your cards right there is HUGE amounts of money involved. The Brahman industry is huge in South/Central America, and in Thailand as well as that whole area. Some of the big breeders make thousands and thousands of dollars off one animal. The Grand Champion Red Brahman Bull at the International Brahman Show in Houston sold to someone in Columbia for $100,000. The ranch I work at had the Reserve Champion. They were offered $50,000 for it but they turned it down. They sold one heifer to a guy in Columbia for $40,000. There is more money in it than I ever imagined. With American Brahmans, the business isnt so strong with American customers, but the International business is booming.

man thats one of the things you want in a brahman x they are built in fly swats for the eye's the ear's aint the problem it all in the carcass..you know the end result the thing hanging on the rail

Brahman and Brahman composites are always going to be popular in the environments Diehard40 outlines.
The breed which equals the Brahman in these characteristics, yet has a top quality carcase, is the Tuli. Tuli also cross well with Brahman, exibiting maximum heterosis and adding the Bos taurus influence without weakening the adaptability to harsh environments, and improving overall fertility and calf survival.

I think the discount had More to do with quality than with just brahman cross. I just sold an 8 month old bull that I missed castrating. Sold in the calf sale for almost $600. I was worried he would be condsiderably docked but was happy. He was out of a red brahman bull and a brangus cow so he was a big % of brahamn. I think thaat buyers are just sick of the brahmans that look like they came off the grasslands of Africa or India. :cboy:

They're discounted because they can discount them. If you'll run them through a feed out program, you may be surprised at how well they do. A few years ago we feed some steers out and had the 4th highest return for the calves.

It's a perception.. like a rat tail getting docked. Buyers can get away with it, so they make a few $$ on an "eared" calf. I have to agree that they have a reputation for being "dark cutters" because of being easily stirred up, but that can be affected by culling cattle with those traits.

I can sympathize with your problem.
Not sure how the American markets work, but in Canada I can't even give my herd away ! I've had to do some selective marketing pitching quality to whom ever will listen & still barely break even. At a stockyard I'm a joke !!! Yet I've seen some pretty pathetic creatures fetch a mighty buck & I can't understand why . . . my long yearling steers top out at 1,000 to 1,300 lbs (all naturally) & look prime compared to many of the others.
Now, laugh if you will . . . but I love my Highlands, money makers or not !
