Help Support CattleToday:

Why aren't producers tagging them before they ship?

Sale barn we ship to will tag them if needed but for what they charge per animal I can tag 7 or 8 at home.
I had never seen them before yesterday. They just arrived here. I have no idea where you could get them if you did want to tag them yourself. We will see what happens going forward.

We got 300 from the state vdacs guy a month ago... free at the time... but I have got to see about what kind of "tagger" is required for them.
For any of the dairy animals I have shipped and did not have a tag... it cost 3.50 for them to tag at the sale.....and it is required on all dairy type cattle... cows, heifers, bulls, steers, baby calves...has been for over a year or 2.
Have not seen any cull/pound cows here tagged... but it may have to do with them crossing the state line there, Dave... But if you read the printed rules, it does NOT include any cattle going directly to slaughter... so don't know why they are doing it there...
Ask at the sale barn, or catch one of your vet friends and ask the whys/where tos....about it, there in your area.

You can order them online easily, but they are NOT CHEAP! The ones I got were $4.49 each. The sale barns may be where all the free tags went, if they aren't passing the cost on yet. I tried to get some of the free ones, but the state said they were all gone.

RFID 840 button tags have techincally been required in anything leaving the farm here for 10+ years. Currently they run about $3.12 a piece (just ordered a bag for next falls calves) and to my knowledge have never been available free in this state unfortunately.

The sale barn charges $15 per tag to apply them according to their newsletter. So I was wrong only about 5x what it cost to tag them at home.

Wow, the state only started doing it here recently. No cost to the producer. And only in cows going back to the farm.

interesting. not seeing anything like that here as far as I know. sold 13 head on the 21st mixed load, bred and dry cows, a couple steers. charges are as usual: check off, brand inspection, feed, insurance, commission, vet/preg check, and yardage. if they are tagging things, they aren't charging anything separate. they do use colored regular tags in the bred cows, but they have been doing that for years.

I have had the vet put 840 tags in heifer calves for several years and in the yearling bulls when we run breeding soundness exams. Vet said the supply of free ones ran out so he ordered 5000 of them at $2.50/each and will have to pass the cost on to clients.

Just had my heifers checked and bangs vaccinated. Vet put the new ID tag in their ears. I didn't ask about cows going to the plant or else where. Not sure what the sale barns are doing as I have been selling direct to backgrounder for quite a few years. I'll have to see what the next round of calves will be required to have. All new to me, not excited about the change, but realize others have been doing it for years. Just another thing to do and one more expense to deal with.

Just had 3 heifers bangs vaccinated yesterday, they got the round electronic tags. No more metal clip. He said Washington and Oregon will do away with it in 2 years. 1 preg check and 3 bangs was $168, that's reasonable for my area.
Did he say why Oregon and Washington will do away with it in a couple of years?
