and at 8 weeks... they go on feed? grass?

By 8 weeks they should already be getting some hay or grass, but you'll need to keep graining them for a while.

Right, dun. We start trying to get our calves on feed and grain when they are about 1 week old. It's slow progress and small amounts until they figure it out. The price I gave figures in milk replacer, grain, and hay. From there, you have to decide what the calf is for. Do you want to finish it for slaughter? Is it a heifer you want to retain for your herd. The end product will determine what you do after the 8 weeks.
