Bloated Calf

Well I gave her the saliva from a healthy cow. I was talking to a guy who knows a guy in his 80's and that guy said he thinks it's the dairy feed I'm giving her. He thinks it has to much fine Crumbles of corn. Says it is heavy on starch. Then I got to checking and she started having trouble when I switched from calf starter to the dairy feed. I switched because my local feed store was out several times when I went to get the starter. I'm going to get calf starter tomorrow (from a different feed store) and switch her to that slowly. Don't want to shock her system...

I'd cut down on her feed anyways and give her access to decent grass hay unless she's bones. At least until you get her bloat issues sorted out.

I watched a video where the vet cutting up a dead cow talked about having calves that constantly bloat for no reason. He showed a large lymph node that he said can swell if the calf has had a virus or such and can restrict the valve letting gas belch out. He was saying that can often be the cause. Not sure how you'd fix it though other than a trocar until it settles down.

Hi All. I have a heifer calf half beef quarter jersey quarter Holstein. She is 3 months old. I tried to take her off of milk at 2 months old, because she was eating 5 pounds of grain a day. And she bloated. Running her around got her going again and the bloat went away. Then I tried weaning her again at almost 3 months old after being on grain for 5 days she quit drinking water and bloated. I treated her with oil. Vet said to use Mineral Oil. She went back down after being bloated for 3 days. Fast forward to 5 days ago I took her off of milk again. Yesterday evening she bloated. I took her for a walk and she passed gas and looked normal. This morning she was slightly bloated. I gave her a bottle of milk, because once again she isn't drinking any water. I gave her electrolytes at noon, she's swelled up like a barrel. I gave her oil like the vet had me do last time. The vet said he thinks she has something wrong inside of her and she's going to be a chronic bloater. But neither him nor the other 2 people I have talked to about her understand why she bloats when she is taken off of milk?? They all agree that she should be bloating from the milk Not when she is taken off of the milk. I wonder if her rumen isn't developing like it should? The vet said it may be that her abumason isn't developed correctly.? She's pooping and peeing and she's eager to trot wherever I lead her on the halter. She looks like she swallowed a 55 gallon barrel.
Any updates?

Hi, she is currently drinking a bottle of milk in the morning and a bottle of water at night, if I reduce the milk or don't give her the bottle of water she reduces the amount of water she drinks to basically nothing.

She hasn't bloated since the day after I made this post. I took her off the grain I was giving her originally and so far she's doing well.

she needs to be eating 5lbs of calf grain a day before weaning off the milk , at 5 to 6 months I go to a 14% stocker grower textured feed till 8 to 9 months a # 10 can twice a day
