RedPoll calf six months old, blackleg 16 days ago, administered tetracyclene la day one, two and five, calf still hanging on, but doesn't seem to get well. Stands around a lot and recently stool black and thin. Would like to know about progression of desease, and what more I can do? Thanks.

The best antibiotic for blackleg is penicillin, not tetracycline. If it is indeed blackleg, the course is: activation of the spores by localized anoxia, gas production by these anaerobic bacteria, toxins also produced which drop the animal and cause severe muscle damage and death. Kidney failure can result as well. There are several websites with a description of the disease, this happens to be the first one I saw when I searched. Good Luck, V

Thanks for responses Vicky the Vet and Bob. Bob, left hind quarter was swelled up, squisy sound. Vet shaved that quarter and poked it full of holes with needle, foamy stuff came out. his diagnosis was blackleg. calf seems a little more perky now 3 weeks after. Peter Simonsen.
