Belgian blue cattle

The bull has better manners - the heifer is sticking her tongue out at you! LOL
Heifer is massive!
The majority of her photos are with her tongue out 🙈 Just an odd habit I guess. Had one doing the same, but she grew out of it before weaning.

Got one photo with everything in place 😅

Caused by a under/over bite?
/sorry couldn't resist *heads for cover*

Awesome heifers and cattle overall. A tad jealous how color over there is not the be all end all as it can be here.

I'm pretty sure the tongue is larger in double muscled cattle. It's already a relatively large muscle, so the double muscle genetics affect it.

Belgian blues can have such issue as an enlarged tongue. It sometimes can cause severe issues with nursing. It's a genetic trait and blue breeders are acknowledging this issue and testing their animals for that. Can avoid it with safe bloodlines. Haven't payed much of attention to that when crossing as it occured only twice and wasn't causing any issues. The other calf also had abit of blue in her, but only 12,5%.

Good luck. Someone is really pushing their breed. In the US people want the kind of beef and steaks they are getting USDA grade. Horned and non black take a hit at auction yards.

Bluex bull calf born today. 281days gestation, assisted. The third blue calf for the cow. All been posted on this thread before. She had black and white line-backed heifer last year. Will be quite a heavy calf. Maybe not as big as last year's heifer, but close.

Tell us about the assistance it took. Malpresentation? Hip locked? Just a big calf?

Found her standing with the tail up at 6.30am. Walked around for a while, saw her staying up all the time. Checked- calf's feet and head had entered pelvic area. Waited for abit. She did push abit. Finally she layed down around 8am. Saw no progress, so decided to give a helping hand. Last year her blue heifer by a different sire was 135,6lbs, assisted while standing. Cow stood up this time as well. Saw that feet were decent size, so slowly started working with a jack and calf arrived quite easily. No stucking on hips. Calf on the ground by 8.20am. Calf is fair size one. Should be smaller than his sister, but could be around 120lbs. Cow is 10 years old. Calf's size and her preference to calve standing were the main factors for the assistance.
