I am located in central Missouri and have been researching beefalo production. I have found little information on the beefalo market. Does anyone have stock available or,Can anyone tell me about a quality producer in my area where I can buy bred heiffers or cow-calf pairs. I am willing to haul a reasonable distance.

Also, what is a fair price for these combinations?

I don;t know about beefalo, but there is an outfit I think around Springfield, MO that is advertising pairs for $900

At the farfest in Springfield there is always a booth for the Beefalo association, it's been in the past in the lower level of the building they do the draft horse competition

American Beefalo International at <A HREF="http://www.ABABEEFALO.ORG" TARGET="_blank">www.ABABEEFALO.ORG</A> They serve the breeders in the area you are intrested in.I have beeb into beefalo for the past 2 years. I would like more of these remarkable animals. There calm to be arround and really smart. There so easy to take care of. I wish you all the sucess inthe world.I don't know to much about price but they tend to run higher than normal cattle,You would need to expect to pay more. Cindy

I am going today to look at Beefalo near Sedalia Mo. at the James Fowler farm. Don't believe I am ready to buy today, but this may be a start. Never know I may just be in the business this afternoon. I doubt it!

Hi Cindy, Thanks for your interest.

We did go look and were really impressed with the Fowler's stock. They had a lot.

Thier stock is all full blood, registered and looking good. A white faced, black bull that looked great. All thier stock was docil and would come to call.

They had two Cow Calf pairs that they were willing to sell, one bull calf and one a heifer. My daughter fell in love with the heifer calf. Still didn't buy. They are a little expensive, but considering some of the advantages, may be a bargain. We decided to buy some meat from them and do a "taste test" before making a decision. Been eating Beefalo all week and love it.

The only problem I can see is finding a market. Maybe you can share some of your experience in that area with me?

Looks like we will probably do something and are leaning toward that pair, to start. In the meantime we have been contacted by another producer in north east Mo. and are thinking about traveling again this weekend.

How about you, are you building a large herd? I haven't seen too many people in this area raising beefalo. I did email a few that were on the registry from missouri but received only one reply.

Tell me a little more about your stock and some of your experience. I am looking for any information I can collect.

in australia a while ago the beefalo market was seen as a new and revolutionary breed in the way of beef production but it never took off. alot of farmers lost alot of money by selling all their stock to invest in the beefalo market.

When looking at marketing non-traditional animals you migh want to consider either finishing them yourself and selling to a niche market, or talking with the original seller and see if they are willing to help you market.

I Agree as the Australian market is well and thriving. I know of a producer who is sending semen over yearly.The Market is healthy.The US has a larger gene pool to pull from than some isolated countries.

Gary, I to am isolated with a large segment of the cattle producers rasing composite cattle for market.I have found there is a large number of people who do not want beef.These are persons with large health probblems. Our Type 2 diabetics,heart attacks etc you get the point and there willing to pay the extra money to have there beefalo and eat it to. So that is one way. The other is internet sales I think alot of work. The other is chain stores in your area.If you plan to get that big.Also I talked to my local IGA, And they will sell it to the public for me. The catch is it would need to be inspected FDA. That is about 1/2 a state away I would have to haul.So we are talking to folks who will buy it by the 1/2 beefalo.By staying small I don't have to worry about supply and demand.And I generate a nice little income too.

I have found the animals to train so easy I train horses.So it came pretty natural to me to train the cows the same way. Had a mare that needed ultrasounded for foal,loaded her into a straight load trailer the cow on the other side to check back with calf and the vet really got a kick out of that!!!!Opened the doors and horse on one side and cow on the other. People want and are willing to pay for a Great product.The animals have so many plusses Ive tried to figgure why more people don't breed them I guess its because there isn't a uniform color or type ie.as in other breeds. But you can bet there an all American breed.
