Bangs

Help Support CattleToday:

Cattle used for reproduction need to be vacinated before they are 12 months old. After 12 months, A test can be run to see if they carry the disease but vacination is not effective. The vaccine must be given by a vet and paperwork filed with the government. The animal is tattooed in the ear and tagged with a special bangs tag. You give bangs vaccinations so your cattle do not become infected with brucelosis (sp). Do a google search for bangs and you should get plenty of hits.

There was only a few herds in the US with Brucellosis until recently when the buffalo came out of the park and spread it to the cattle herds - again. If you live in a state near Yellowstone Park you should especially Bangs vac. Heifers have to be done between the age of 4 and 12 months - no later is allowable. Vet needs to do this. Gives a shot, tattoo and clip. Vac is not 100% guarantee protection, but at least 65%.

If you are having abortions in your cows in late gestation this is a symptom of the brucellosis. Very contagious to cattle, buffalo, pigs and humans.

If you have had cattle come into your herd with in the last 30 days to 1 year you can see symptoms. Contracts via mucal secretions. Cow licks another cows rear or afterbirth, ect. Humans get it the same way by touching the mucus or afterbirth.

If you are selling bred cows they will be checked for tattoo - the clip will not do. Has to be a readable tattoo. Montana will not allow cattle into the state without a readable tattoo.

Even from a bangs free state or a certified and accreditated herd?

I was under the impression that it was, looked it up to make sure what was who and where. Amendment from March 2004:

I think the b-free states cattle can travel through, but if they remain in MT they had to be tested prior to importing into the state. So that is much more intense than a reading of tattoo. I read they are working on new regs since the brucellosis has been bad in Wyoming the past few months. Not sure what that will intale. Canada also can bring down with out Bangs(when they were able to) into the states, but we have to have them bangs to go up there until a certain period of time went by. That was 2001.

Maybe Oldtimer can clarify more on what's up with the regs.
