I am going to band my steer calves this year. I have a question on which tetanus shot I should give them? Tetanus toxid or tetanus antitoxin? how much and how many times?

My Bad, Red Bull, I will be banding bulls! Making them in to steers!

Been banding for years here, have never given a tet shot.

' the bigger the bull and the more contaminated (sloppy, dusty) the environment, the more likely that tetanus is to occur'

Call me lucky, but I think doing it when they are young, and in fairly clean conditions, its very unlikely to have a case of tetanus.

We have never given a tetanus shot to our calves either and we band everything with a sack and 2 nuts since I was crawling. Never had a problem (knock on wood lol).

Through the years, I've seen about as many baby calves with tetanus as big bulls.
That said, with the babies, it's usually just one calf here and there. But, in recent years, with more folks banding bigger bulls...I frequently see 'outbreaks', with 10-15 or more affected at one swell foop. That's a loss that I'm not inclined to take, when it's so easily prevented.
