Banding at birth tips & tricks

Help Support CattleToday:

We have to weigh our calves at birth for there registration. If we can't do this in the field we will grab baby and mama will follow up to the chute. We seperate them via a close panel that she can still see and smell here calf. We weigh, band (if not staying a bull to consider) and tag. Return baby to mama and off they go. Sometimes it takes a while for them to get back to the main pasture but its fun to watch.
If banded at birth the calves seem to not notice the band much at all. We always give a tetanis shot when banding as well.

we band within days of birth; no matter what you hear, you'll have to find something that works for you. we bring them into a corral, escort the mama cows out and go from there..........

Same thing here. From the calving pen to the newborn pen, they all have to go through the corral. Just push mama through and snag the calf. No problems with nasty mamas. Oh, and any nasty ones don't last more than a year around here....
