baby calf covered in maggots

Help Support CattleToday:

Have never experienced maggots on a new/young calf, but it is not uncommon on sheep of all ages
(young lambs right on up to the elderly ewes). The maggots can get started due to messy bottoms, and
also in our wet coastal weather, the wool on the back gets wet and stays wet, creating an area they can start.in.

Over use of fly spray or other topicals to kill the maggots can create an overdose of toxins and make the animal
ill. That's not stated very professionally.

Mineral oil or some prefer baby oil applied to the damaged areas of skin do help the healing process. Even as the
skin heals it is vulnerable to drying and cracking or sunburn.
