Average age of a cull cow

Help Support CattleToday:

I tend to agree with Dun. Loosing teeth at 12 is more of a genetics issue than sandy soil. BTW, this is a braford type cow.

We dont breed our own replacements, we breed and sell terminals. Rather we cull 10% and replace every year. That theoretically gives us 10-11 years as oldest in the herd. If we get a wild one, a shy breeder, or a multitude of other reasons she gets first shot at the hamburger line, then age comes into play.

Losing teeth may be genetic, but having the teeth worn down at an earlier age can surley be attributed to sandy soils. I remember talking to an older man at a sale barn years ago that had a sandy soil property, and he told me he routinely had to ship his cows at 12-13 because their teeth were worn down to nubs.
