It's actually labeled for use in pigs - but I think I recall someone here saying they've used it on calves with scours. It's an oral solution, contains spectinomycin. Anyone used it, and how effective has it been?

Works good. I have a home made recipe for electrolytes and I put 8 or 10 cc's in the with the electrolyte drench. Never has failed yet. Works better and faster than just a shot of nuflor etc. I also use "spectam" which I think is spectamyacin for pinkeye.

Forgot the most important use. My daughters and wife use it if they get infected earing holes. :D We don't spend much at the Dr. as you can tell.

ollie,
care to share your recipt for the electrolytes with us?...always nice to be aware of workable approaches. ;-)

ollie,
Gotta remember that one!!! 8) Does she ever wanna re negoitate the acreage? :( :P

LOL.

Yes - please post that recipe...I've got a calf here that sure could use it. Tried a combination of LA200, Kao-Pec, Bismu-Kote, vit. B, and banamine; it just isn't helping this calf like I wish it would. Been tubing him to keep him hydrated. I have access to the Spectam stuff; thought perhaps giving antibiotics orally would take care of this 'bug' a little quicker. I was just a little reluctant to try it without knowing whether it could actually be used on calves. The little guy isn't dead yet and I wouldn't want to accidently kill him. They're rather pricey nowdays.

Ok Milkmaid. Here is the complex formula I use.

1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup corn white corn syrup ( She says I usually want her to sub sugar so I can carry it as a powder and mix with water with out going back to the house when I find a scouring calf.)
10cc spectam

I usually mix with a quart of water. The recipe is an old friends and he says he uses a half gallon.
It works everytime for me. Sometimes if they get real weak I may treat them twice. It sure goes out the drench tube easier than all that glue junk.

I have even done better than that preston. I have convinced her of a way to be 300% efficient. She needs a tan . She needs exercise and I need the yard mowed. When it was time to get a new mower I told her I would get her a push mower and she could wear a bikini when she mowed. Solved all her problems. She thinks I am the smartest man in the world. I agree.

ollie,
I for one would not try to compete with the ...uh...uh...successful training program you got underway. 8) sounds pretty good...these things have way of changing...or they are converted..or their life...oh.... contingency can crop up at the crazyist times and places  ... and well I guess I will never understand.....just without any particular reason or notice..it seems....they get changed and without sufficent cause..in my opinion.(you notice I am talking to myself here!!!!)  ;-)

I sure hope you were, Preston. I doubt if anybody else could have understood you. Appropriate for you to do that, however. The talking to yourself, I mean. If you'll read your post again, you'll have to admit that it's far from being an intelligent conversation.

ollie - OK, I'm using your concoction, calves are up, drinking, and looking a little more alive. LOL. I'd say it's certainly an improvement. :)

Now, how long/often do you usually treat with this formula? The way I've been pumping extra fluids into them along with the concoction of drugs, I'm not sure their manure is going to harden up until I slow down with the liquids. Kinda makes it so I'm not real sure when they're well enough to stop with the drugs.

Oh - and do you usually treat calves with LA200 along with this concoction? I'm just treating with the oral Spectam, no LA200 or other antibiotics.

When I doctor for scours, I am working on cows still on their mother usually quite young. They just get a touch of scours either from too much milk and it turns into a bacterial infection or starts out as a bacterial infection. I usually treat them once or twice. I don't usually use any other drug in conjunction with the drench.

You guys ever used unflavored jello for scours? Helps dob'um up quick and slows down the dehydration. We use Nuflor or LA200 with that too of course along with kaeopectin.

They're looking much better now, Ollie. Thanks. :D Four appear to be fully recovered, fifth one still has a touch of scours but he's getting better. One of 'em got out last night and led me on a merry chase all over the neighbor's yard. Stinkin' little heifer calf - but at least she's feeling good.

I used this foumula again today. Calf didn't have scours 36 hrs previous. She was so sick she at first wouldn't raise her head. Scours. Drenched her and tonight she was able to stand . Drenched her again and I bet tomorrow I won't do anything else. I have therefore decided to copyright this recipe. It is now called "Love potion number 9" An individual/company/ranch may not use this formula with out the express written consent from the grand Ollie of Cattle Today.

This is the express written permission. Terms of use are as follows.
1. During the administration of this formula the administrator must hummm the chorus of the song "love potion number 9"

2. After full recovery the administrator must say out loud "The Great Ollie is my daddy.

There are no other terms . No compensation required.
You're Welcome

However...I am indebted to you for that recipe, Ollie.

I've been getting the Spectam stuff from my boss - was telling him about the results and that I think it's miracle stuff. LOL. I really do think so. When I treated those calves they'd be down and looking awful one day, up and bawling at me 12 hours later. Best results I've ever had with any treatment.

*bows down* Thank you, Great and Mighty Ollie.
