Any good looking calves?

Help Support CattleToday:

Visited another breeder today and saw a lot of calves sired by Bulls we've either wanted to breed to, haven't heard of before, or never thought of breeding to.

One that I kept drawing my eye to (heifers) was SAV Supercharger. Did get a chance to see some nice Rainfall calves also. Definitely Charlo pedigree.

Was impressed with the growth on RB Active Duty and was tickled pink over how lovely RB Confirmed looked. I have a heifer from him that I love and I went back today to get more of his embryos. Seeing his other daughters didn't allow me to waiver from my decision to get more of him, although I saw so many great breedings.

I agree with the person I spoke with today, SAV genetics work well with RB's.

NEFarmWife,
What can you tell us about the Rainfall calves? Any thoughts on Rainfall as a heifer bull?

I can't speak for heifers but if he is a heifer bull, may consider using him. The reason I'd use him is to balance out our really big cows. They're very noticeable in a pen of other sired calves but they do look incredible.

In another post, talked about Charlo and how they didn't wean off good. If I were to sell a bunch of calves, I wouldn't use Charlo sired. But if I were going for replacements and correcting size, I'd use Charlo progeny.

The heart of our herd is to produce high quality fats direct to slaughter. However, we are branching out into PB. That's where I might use rainfall.

Check out SAV supercharger. Good lord, I love his calves! Not sure he's a heifer bull either but I think his calves are about as nice looking as they can get.

NEFarmWife,
Do you mean you can pick them out because they are smaller frame cattle?
Rainfall is +14 CED with -.7 BW, so he is the heifer bull out of the flush.
President sold for $750,000. Rainfall $460,000 and Raindance $450,000, Governor $435,000 and Rainmaster...at ABS sold for $165,000. Supercharger was in the same sale for $235,000...so you could have picked him up cheap if you had been there.

In case you haven't seen Rainfall's video.

Supercharger gets you two of the SAV's best foundation cow families.
What do you think of SAV Drover?

Yes, much smaller. They'd be "dinks" in our herd but honestly, they look great! I'd say in that family, Rainfall is better than any of them and I believe a few of us there were in agreement. I'm betting we'll use him this spring to do some work to our cattle.

Can't say enough about Supercharger though. I had been unfamiliar with him. And at 200k+, that steal is still way above my price range. Lol. Every time I spotted one without realizing it was a Supercharger, I'd point it out and ask who that was because I loved it's look. My husband said, "guess I know who we're trying this year".

There was a photo of a Raindance bull calf out of a Renown cow and he is a beast...although it's hard to find a SAV bull calf that doesn't look like a beast. The usual debate is Resource or Renown but I keep seeing nice animals out of Recharge so he is a bargain. The other debate is Seedstock or Sensation....I would lean toward Seedstock but that is from photos/catalogs alone. Of course, that leaves out the debate over the XXP sons...and that will be followed by who is the best son of Resource and who is the best son of Renown. And, to me, no DNA test will be able to answer that question. It is what your husband observed....people go out in a pasture and they fall in love with calves...and then their daddy.

We were all about Sensation. We ordered him before Semen was available when Herbster bought him. And while he's been okay, he isn't our best group when it comes to sires. We didn't like Seedstock at calving and have used him a couple years now... because they grow into themselves nicely.

I really do believe that you have to breed for what you're game is. We've changed our program tremendously when we started feeding them out. We need them to gain well and grade good. We also knew last breeding/calving that we wanted to retain more females this year and cull some of our older girls. It's a hard balance because you can't really have the best of both.

We are so fortunate to be in an area that allows us to see the best sired calves out there. Many of whom are raised in my backyard on the other side of my trees.

I'd wager to bet that Raindance/ President will emerge from the pack of that flush.
Although many people are afraid to try something that isnt Super Calving Ease.
Rainfall will definitely be more CE to use on Heifers.
But any commercial cattleman breeding Cows would be leaving pounds/dollars on the table using CE bulls regardless of their growth EPD'S in my opinion.

Do they have conventional Raindance semen? How much is his semen?

I believe he is $50 Conventional, and $75 for Female.

Can't get pictures to post, so this will have to work. This is a renown bull, 7 months old. Stand out of the group, out of one of my best cows. Thinking about keeping him for personal use. Pick him apart, hold nothing back. You can't hurt my feelings.

This is a bred heifer out of a chisum 6175. Very lacking in the butt department, but long as a train. Need to breed here to something that will add some rear this spring.

Renown heifer out of a very good cow. I sure like her a lot.

That's all I could get to cooperate

The bull calf in the link weighed 760 at 240 days with no creep. I sure didn't guess him that big. They mating must have really went together well.
These renown calves are almost too tame. I had one heck of a time working them. All they want to do is stand and chew their culd. Hotshot was a must.
Over all I am very happy with the renown calves.
