So, yesterday Scott said that Zeke wanted to go over to the Kudzu place and see if he could look at the 2 calves were are giving him to raise. Scott's wife wanted to go riding, so Scott saddled up 3, and they road the field roads over to the Kudzu -pasture to see if those might be out somewhere that Zeke could see them. Well, when they out there, Scott saw a JERESY cow inside the corral, eating salt and minerals! He wondered where the hell SHE came from! He told Zeke ad his wife to ride up and push her to the back section so he could keep her up til he could find out where she came from, who she belonged to etc. He told them that they would ride the 220 acre perimeter fence and try to find where the fence was down. Well, she wouldn't push....just tried to lick the horses, so Zeke got off, put his lead rope around her neck, and led her to the back part of the corral!! Scott called a few neighbors he thought might have a Jersey buy it wasn't any of theirs. He was going to post a notice at the local general feed store today. And he left the cow in our corral, in case she was in heat. Didn't want those 2 bulls we have in there to get hold of her. They spent a couple of hours ridimg the fence, and never found a place cow could get in or out. When they got back to the gate, he said " Damn, I wonder how the hell she got in?" No one could have let her in, because the qate stays locked. Well, then..after half a day riding the fence, Zeke sp0eaks p and says "{ Oh, I let her in yesterday! I found her in the road by the gate, and she looked sad and lonely" so I let her in with the cows!"

We have a creek that runs the south border of our property, and when it gets to the road it runs down 1 side for a while, then under the road and by Scotts row crop land where we have the dove field. Ir runs through our hardwoods bottom, which is in a small valley... or as much of a valley as you get down in south Ga. A few years back, we decided we would damn it up and make a wet land area for ducks. We had started doing some dozer work which muddied the creek up along the road, and here came the EPA, raising hell, telling us to cease and desist, that we were committing felonies, etc. Said we had to get approval from them, apply and PAY for permits, get their engineers to look over the site and design what THEY wanted, us to do, etc. So, we just said " Forget it". Well, last year the beavers came in and built it for us! Made their damn almost in the exact same spot we were gonna use and it has been great. We shot ducks several times this season. We have the pond out by the corral that has bream, bass and channel cats in it, and it is way overstocked because it doesn't get fished enough. We had told Zeke we would pay him to catch some out of there and move the to the beaver pond. So most days he rides his bike down there, and catches fish, puts each one in a bucket when he catches it, and takes it to the beaver pond, about 300 yds away. A trip for each fish! Each day he does this, He will text me and Scott with the species and the number he transported that day. Well, apparently, when he got over there Saturday, she was standing in the road by the gate He called to her and she walked over to him and stood there at the entrance, licking his hands and rubbing her head on him. He knows where we hide the key to the gate and the tack room we built in the new pole barn He keeps his fishing rod in it. So, he lets her in and stays there with her til time to come home! Never said a word about it when they found her, when they put her in the corral, on the 2 hour ride looking for holes in the fence, Scott asked him why, and he said he forgot! LOL We figure, though, he may have been worried Scott would be mad with him.
Like I said, Scott is posting it today at the feed store, and will in the cafe at the sale barn this Saturday. If no one claim her in a week or so, Zeke gets another cow! He has named her "Gail" already. We don't know where he got that from. He says she is sweet, and Gail is sweet. Might be a girl he knew from school or church.

I think it's just wonderful what y'all do for that young man.
You have no idea ( or maybe you do) what all I would have done for him if I had gotten to the sob that beat them before he was caught. But, we just do what is right and decent for him. Matthew 25:40 King James Version. 40) And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, In as much as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. I think this verse cuts both ways....it applies when you do horrible things to others as well.

That's the verse I was put in mind of as well. And yeah, there's a few people out there that I'd love to catch walking free, alone, and at the right place and time.

You are the first person I thought of when Scott told me! I thought: "Man, if Murray lived around there I'd ask him to show Zeke how to make her into a nurse cow!" :)
Poor girl is so lost.
I bet it wouldn't take much!
Hopefully she finds her home. But ol Zeke may miss her. She sounds like a good cow already. And he sounds like good help!

If she gets claimed, your gonna have to find him one!
I bet they'd love fresh milk every day and messing with them babies!

I had a cow show up here a lil while back. She came from about 17 or 19 miles north of here. She got moved after she calved and they didn't realize she had a calf. She went looking for it!! Calf didn't make it. But we found the owner after a bit. Just incredible. She was a traveler!

Scott said this one was dry, and had been for a while, it looked like. And, if she is bred she's not that far along. Scott just called me. It just has gotten dark around here, and Scott said he got worried about Zeke. His bike was gone, and Scott figured he was down at the Kudzu place moving fish for us. He knew it would be full blown night by the time Zeke rode the bike home, so Scott went down there to get him in the truck. He said Gail was laying down on a pile of hay ,chewing her cud, and Zeke was sitting beside her, arms around her neck, head layed on her shoulder, sound asleep. The man is coming tomorrow to pick up the black cows from the ones we bought today in El Paso. I told Scott if he finds Gail's owner, to just buy her and take it out of that money. Gonna have to get Zeek to think of another name though! Gail!!! Just don't sound like a cow's name does it?

Considering the names we've given a few, that's friendlier or more original than half of them.

Top names we've used that stick with me:
-boolay
-red
-old red
-sweetie-pie
-annabelle
-purdy (best cow ever)
-mama cow
-the grey b****
-the brown sisters
-zero
-bud
-speck
-speckle
-freckle
-fleck
-friday
-good Friday
-iris
-ol' messed up legs
-the white faced bull (multiple, recurring title)
-the brockle b****
-bessie (rip)

And the rest have mostly been tag numbers followed by whatever flavor of profanity they drove me too on whatever given day. I'm generally a nice guy, but I've called plenty of cows, calves and bulls things I'd never call a person unless really heated.

U can't make that kinda thing up!!
Gail is definitely original!

Well, we found Gail's owner. Scott's old lady put it on FB, and that's how we found them. She belonged to an older couple that lives about 5 miles straight back as the crow flies behind our Kudzu pasture. Probably 15 or 20 miles by road. They had gotten her from another old couple this winter, that could not afford to feed her. Scott called them and asked if they had a cow out. They said yes, and that it had been gone a week. Scott told then we had her. They said they didn't have a trailer, and would try to find someone with a truck and trailer to come get her. Thy said they had been looking for somebody for a while to take her to the sale because they couldn't hardly feed her anymore, either. They asked Scott if he wanted her. Said if you do, you can have her! I told him to go get a $300 gift certificate at the local IGA/butcher shop with the money I got paid yesterday and take that to them. He said he would take $250 out of my money, and he'd put another $250 with it, and take them a $500 card.

These people had her for the last 6 months, and the people they got her from had her a year, and neither had a bull, so she is open. He took her from the Kudzu place today, over to a neighbor that has a red Brahma bull. So, looks like Zeke now has a cow, and in about 9 mos he's gonna have a Brah x Jersey calf. And possibly a nurse cow. There is a dairy or two left down in that county, so they may try raising some with her after she calves. Damn I am glad I live 3 hours away! I do NOT want to fool with any part of that at all! @MurraysMutts , would you want an all expenses paid vacation down to south GA in about 9 months?!! :D:p:eek:

I'd love to take a week or two off about that time of year!!
Can't promise you'll still have a jersey/brahma calf when I leave tho!! 🤣

Perhaps I could bring an okie grown baby or two...

If she ain't nursing babies then, I will trade the cow and the calf for Bessie! :) Maybe this one will be as good. From what they say, she is gentle as a lap dog. Scott said Zeke can lead her around with his hand under her jaw. I have been successful hooking up an orphan foal with a nurse mare, but never tried a cow yet. Zeke has a way with animals. For some reason they take to him. Maybe it is his gentle demeanor. Maybe they can sense he is no threat. Who knows, he might get her to take another one with no problem at all.

Hopefully she breeds up easy. That's gonna be one pretty calf!

She might not breed. Dunno how old she is, or whether she has ever had a calf or not. If she doesn't, she can just be Zeke's pet. But if she does have a calf and it is a heifer, it will bring a good price. Steer calf...not so much. Zeke could grow him up to be an ox, and teach him to pull a pony/horse cart. I reckon.

I could find a couple of calves to bring down....nice time of year to make a trip like @MurraysMutts said....
Gail will calve late Dec or January, Not so nice then, but come on down. I will take you on a guided quail and rabbit hunt using the smoothest riding, gentlest horses, multi field trail champion beagles, and the finest pointers and setters in south Georgia, the quail hunting capitol of the world :)

Well just got back from bike night to find Scott had called me and left a message about Gail. She is in heat, and she and the red Brahma bull are going at it like two teens that both took Viagra!!! Fingers crossed that it is a heifer. If it is, she will put a lot of money in Zekes pocket. Or pay a month's worth of at home care for Miss Mattie. Know how I know? Yesterday when I posted we bought Gail and took her to a red Brahma, I got a PM from a CT member. I got to tell you, l when I read it, it must have hit the turbo on my allergies. My eyes started watering BIGT TIME. I promised not to say their name, but the told me if that calf was a heifer they would buy her at weaning. Said to let them know when she calved because they were gonna mail the check THEN. I told them that they didn't have to do that. What if the heifer dies? They said " Well, then we just lost $4000, but if we didn't Zeke would lose. Yep. That is what this wonderful person offered to pay! So, I just sent he/she a message that Gail is breeding! Sir/ Madam, you are a true Christian and a Great American. I wish I could let people know who you are, but I understand...kinda like that myself. I want to assure you again...right here in public.....that every single penny of that money will be spent on Zeke and Miss Mattie. What you have done has touched me, and Scott, deeply. . It is so uplifting when you discover that there are still exceptionally good out there. Thank you again, from the bottom of my heart.

And I wanna ask everyone on here to PRAY FOR A HEIFER!! :)
