Ok folks.. another new situation for me. Frankly, I'm getting a little tired of this. :(

Have a 10 year old Brahman heifer, with a 5 month old bull calf at side. Sunday morning heard her calf crying, went out to find the cow laying alone in the pasture. Immediately checked her out.. nose was wet, eyes bright, no discharge anywhere, etc. etc. Then she tried to get up. Could get up on the front end, but the back end she couldn't control.

Gave her Banamine, food and water. Great appetite, even enjoyed her customary Moon Pies, wasn't thirsty. As well as I can approximate, she went "down" on Saturday. (We were at a sale all day)

An hour after the Banamine, she got up, and could manage 100 feet or so of walking, wobbly on the back. Then she'd slide down.. like in a comma position. She managed to get all the way up to the pens, so we penned her up. We thought maybe milk fever, so we IM'd a bottle of calcium, no change.

This morning the same deal. Couldn't get up, but an hour after Banamine, she got up and let the calf nurse. She's been standing up for 10 -15 minutes, but when she goes to walk after standing for a period of time, she does the slow slide back down.

I'm completely stumpled. Suspect some sort of infection, since the Banamine seems to help, but after that I don't have a clue.

My local vet broke his leg two weeks ago treating a cow for grass tetany, so he's out of commission. I can't load her to haul her anywhere. So while I'm trying to find a vet that will come out to look at her, does anyone have any ideas?

sounds like your cow has grass tetny theres 2 kinds the 1 that makes them bloat 2 it makes them wabble an fall down an staggwer as they walk but i could be rong id dr her for tetny an see what happens scott

Age of cow and time of year points to grass tetany. If not too late try Hi-mag (14%) salt mixed with cottonseed meal or similar. Magnesium is very bitter so it should be "sweetened" to encourage consumption. Good luck!!
