San Antonio's L&H Packing Co.is to close laying off 325 workers. They are ceasing operations after drought and other factors have significantly shrunk the size of the U.S. cattle population. Cow numbers are the lowest in 63 years. They were the main buyers of packer cows in the Central Texas area , closing of the plant will have an impact on the local packer market,

Know an L&H buyer and they have not been aggressive in their buying in over a month. Understand they have only been killing 3 days a week for some time now. Know it won't help packer market but have doubts that it will hurt much either. Cow kill is at several decades lows and wholesale ground beef is at record highs with labor day approaching and school lunch program about to crank back up. Until cull cow numbers increase, don't see much much softening of packer cow market.

Bottom line is none too many cows or beef but too many packing plants and feedyards

Saw that too. Was a little worried, but decided to go ahead and sell our open cows next week regardless.

the other packers will pickup the extra cows from that packers closing.it really shouldnt affect the slaughter cow prices.the high prices are getting people to cull cows quicker than they normally would.

LIke Texas Pawpaw said...too many packers and feedlots. Won't affect price or quantity of meat available.
