Angus Heifer..

I recently purchased a 15 month old replacement heifer calf from a local ranch as an FFA project. she is on grass pasture, oat hay, grain (and being showered with attention) with a stall at night and is currently being halter broke. (my arms hurt just mentioning that! lol) ok, my question is.. she is a california traveler daughter.. and i need to have her bred to calve between sep-dec next year. but what would be a desirable bull to breed her to to get a purebred calf with good confirmation and a low birth weight. the heifer herself has great confirmation and is pretty decent sized for her age. (the same size as her 1/2 brothers that are the same age) I was looking at R A 711 Lad 346.. from bullbarn.com.. but i dont really know much about cattle. What bull is currently in high demand? i really need to get a high price at auction, so a good bull is a must! thanks in advance. -meg

Some questions: Is the heifer registered Angus? Are you planning to sell her calves at purebred sales or the local sale barn? The American Angus Assn. recommends using a bull with a BW EPD of less than 3 on first calf heifers, so the bull you mentioned might not be a good choice for her first calf.

There are lots of good Angus bulls that will work on your heifer. My suggestion is to look at the Bon View New Design 878 bull that's sold by ABS. He should add some frame and muscle, but still falls into the calving ease category. We used him some this year, but still have some semen left on his sire, New Design 036, and used that on heifers we plan to keep. He's a solid, proven performance bull that will likely be popular for years to come. Good luck....
