Angus Bull eye problem

We have a black angus bull that is about 5 years old. One day when we were out checking the cattle we noticed that his eyes were really runny. So we brought him back to the house to keep an eye on him. The next day we go out to check on him and his eyes had burst. Does anyone know what could have caused this?
