I ran across this in my daily topic research.
Sorry Branded, but it made me think of you. :hide:

Anyone that has run commercial cattle for any length of time has came to the same conclusion. It's not just Angus cattle, XL cattle of any breed have the same short comings. Getting something for nothing only works on paper.

Ran across that site some time ago and heartily agree.
Getting something for nothing only works on paper.
Amen and then some.
IMO Those who haven't a proven track record in the commercial world before hanging up a purebred shingle should summarily dismissed as fraudulent imposters.

If big frame, and high ww were so great, and easy money, you wouldn't see simmy's with smaller frames, and lighter ww than angus.

I see creeping with fall calvers, especially late ones, but not spring, momma ain't doing her job.

i have these registered angus.. some OCC and some Forever lady.. they are in head high forage.. still getting skinny with a calf on them. crazy. my stockyard cows are fat as pigs.

Of course big frames and high weaning weights are a worthy goal. That's why Chianinas are so popular.

Might have to add one more wire on top?

In several threads I've brought up "who wants a 1 ton momma cow?"

That's a good article, and while maybe for Manzano a 1000-1250 lb cow is good, that's a little light for what works well here.. again, vastly different environments though.

New Mexico is very rugged country.
My take away is it's best to buy cattle expected to work in New Mexico, from New Mexico
and not import genetics from Kentucky ect. and vice versa.

No doubt that your environment there is different than it is here, however I think the size cows that work for you and I are probably fairly similar. Around 1250, to 1400 or so is my ideal range for a cow. That way the calves should have enough frame to do alright on the market. Those 1000-1250 lbs cows would work well here, but the markets seem to want larger frame calves than those would likely raise.

LOL! I have heifers that I'm getting ready to breed next month that are 1200 pounds open.

Not sure I would breed SAV America to a 1000 pounder, especially not a heifer.

By the way, if a mature cow at Manzano is roughly 1100 pounds, what do the heifers weigh? 650-750?

pretty wild. Just out of curiosity, can you post a few of your registered Dams reg numbers? I'm not going to criticize at all, I'm purely curious if there are noticeable differences when you get up to those kinds of weights.

This cow weighs 2200 pounds

her daughter was 1500 when she gave birth to her first calf

The 1200 pounders I have are a Harvestor daughter and a Colonel daughter, with more on the way.

I'm wanting to breed the heifers to SAV America next month, but have been strongly advised against doing so, because of the damage it could do to them. I heard the same things with Elation, but bred him to heifer and she calved unassisted, no issues at all.

I'm so behind, I thought Charlo was calving ease?

He is, and for the most part President is as well, but Mr. Herbster told me "don't use America on heifers!"

I guess that pretty much eliminated most of us that have moderate cattle from using America or his offspring.

with the size of your heifers I wouldn't worry about it.. maybe don't breed him to an 800 lb heifer though

That's what I thought as well, but he was adamant. He looks out for people that work with his sires, and gives his honest opinion, I think he was concerned that America could screw up a nice heifer, and he didn't want to see that happen.

I really shouldn't use my bull on heifers.. but right now it's either I gamble on losing a heifer or I feed 2 bulls for a year... If I didn't like his calves so much I'd play it safer and have a heifer bull.
