A Japanese company and an American company decided to have a canoe race on the Missouri River. Both teams practiced long and hard to reach their peak performance before the race.

On the big day the Japanese won by a mile. Afterward, the American team became very discouraged and morally depressed. The American management decided the reason for the crushing defeat had to be found. A Management Team made up of senior management was formed to investigate and recommend appropriate action.

Their conclusion was the Japanese had 8 people rowing and 1 person steering, while the American team had 8 people steering and one person rowing. So American management hired a consulting company and paid them an incredible amount of money. They advised that too many people were steering the boat, while not enough people were rowing.

To prevent losing to the Japanese again next year, the rowing team's management structure was totally reorganized to 3 steering supervisors, 2 area steering superintendents and 1 assistant superintendent steering manager and outsourced the remaining 2 supervisor roles to an offshore call center.

They also implemented a new performance system that would give the 1 person rowing the boat greater incentive to work harder. It was called the Rowing Team Quality Management Plan, with meetings, dinners and free pens for the rower. "We must give the rower the empowerment and enrichments through this quality program!"

The next year the Japanese won by two miles. Humiliated, the American management laid off the rower for poor performance, halted development of a new canoe, sold the paddles, and canceled all capital investments for new equipment. Then they distributed the money saved as bonuses to the senior executives

Did you get this out of one of those Ivey League Collard text books? Sounds like this is about what they teach. Its so painfully true its funny. :lol2:

I think you just described the company where Steve works...

Get a plant full of people and work their a$$es off in the heat, all day. Yell at them because they arent' meeting quotas even though management knows that they cannot be met without overtime. Deny overtime. Wait until Thursday and tell everyone that if quotas aren't met by tomorrow, everyone works on Saturday. Making overtime...

Repeat process until every staff member you have that gave a crap to start with quits. Complain that you just can't find qualified workers anymore.

Management takes off Saturday and golfs and spends time with their families. Gets a big bonus.

That is exactly what happened to British Telecom they hired an American Executive, he came over with all the big ideas, Down size, Down size, Down size, had to many Chiefs and not enough Indians, and now the Company is nearly bankrupt from being the biggest wealthiest company in Britain. I know this for a fact as my Husband was one of the Chiefs. He could see where it was going and took EVR. before the money ran out. Not complaining as we have got a good living out of it. All this hierarchy is a load of BS all it needs is Two at the helm and the rest workers that let the management know what is going on on the shop floor. sorry to take over your thread, but it makes my blood boil when you see good businesses go that way. Wonder if that is why we are in this World recession.?
