I'm going to build an alley and a catch pen. How wide should the alley be, also what is a good height for it?

So thirty inches would be acceptable for Hereford and angus, or should I keep it on the narrow side?

Thirty will work, I prefer 29 but some of the real widebodys just before calving have a pretty tight fit.

Better to taper it if that is an option. 20 inch base and 30 at the girth.

I like mine a little tighter. I want them scrapin hair when they come down the chute.
99% of all trainwreck's happen in the chute the tighter the better.

What about length of alley sections with staging gates? ... and should the last one before headgate (I don't have a squeeze chute) be any shorter or does it really matter?
