This is a crazy idea, but I wish, in my world of perfect worlds, it could happen. If someone smarter than me could figure it out, they'd make lotza $$ (or go broke fast).

Many of the lesser popular breeds, you need to deal directly with the owner to buy semen. It's stored in SD, in CO, in TX, in MN -- all over the country. You can't get it from ABS or SS or similar semen distributors. Right now, I'd like to buy a dozen straws of a dozen different bulls, scattered all over the country, most from private parties. To do that, the shipping is outrageous! Would love to see sort of a co-op (?), to market the semen of those breeds that aren't in the big books --or worthy bulls that aren't in the big books for whatever reason -- in one or two or three central locations throughout the country. It costs the same to ship 10 straws as it does 200, if it comes from the same place.

This is my crazy dream . . . .

CRI was into custom collections pretty heavy for awhile. Check with them and see what they have in stock. Another one to try is the 100 stud code here in Oakdale. Alot of people send bulls there to be collected privately. They can usually set you up with just about any breed they've ever collected. I don't deal with them so you're on your own as far as finding them but they are out there.

Genex's added attractions. Great thing I think. We are going to haul a few bulls out to get collected and marketed next year I hope.......!

Till-Hill is correct. We did this with our bull, for those reasons. We always had interest, but the shipping deterred it. For the fee, and the minimum amount to be kept on hand, it is well worth the costs.

I am not sure if the other semen companies offer something like this.

The question to ask yourself is, if I buy just 10 straws and the shipping costs me $90, would I buy the same semen if it cost $90/straw and the shipping was free? Also, sometimes local breed club members will get a order together to help save on shipping.

10 bulls 10 straws each. 100 straws total???? Do you have that many british white cows???

Over $2500 inventory for how many cows Kathy?

Personally I will not carry that kind of inventory over any period of time, having had a tank go bad and lost a mere $900 in semen from an almost new tank, but then we discussed this before.

This will be for my BWs and my angus girls. I know -- that's a lot of semen in the wishbook. I'd rather bank it, if I can, while I can. A few years down the road, those bulls might not be available, or I may not have $ available. Sort of a savings account.

I thought it was a good deal, but them they wanted $1000 to have the CSS testing done on the bull so I lost interest.

Those costs are only if you want the semen to be exportable. If you have a really good bull, why limit your sales to domestic only?

Kathie, keep your money in a sock under the mattress! For a small timer like yourself (how many breeding age females do you have?) I wouldnt order more than two seasons worth. :2cents:

Aww, geez, I thought we were growing out of "small." :) SS, 7 breeding age cows. May add one more BW this year. Part of my thinking, too, is that there some other folks out here with the same dilemna I have: scarcity of BW bulls/small gene pool. So, the tank might be a resource for several people, and benefit all of us a few years down the road with a broader base to work with.

Anyway, the full wishbook probably won't happen this year, but we'll make a dent in it.

This is the e-mail I got from the manager at Genex in Mitchel, SD last spring. I take it as he has to have the test done to get in to the program.

Master Bennett has froze 184 units. We would have a lot of time till next years added attractions info has to be in, I would see if you have any interest in him at home before I would spend the thousand dollars to get his CSS testing done for the added attractions program.

That is my point exactly, that savings account is not overly secure!! and a total waste of money to have laying around on the MAYBE...And what if the NEXT big DEAL pops up and you decide not to use what you have in the tank???
10 head of cows,,,100 straws, how long is that gonna last?????? what about in breeding???
Kinda scary
