So...let's try this again.

It has been a rather busy year here. The cow herd is growing, and the weather has been warm, well up til the last few days anyways. And there's never an end to projects on the farm. But, finally, with the cold weather, I feel no need to do anything more than necessary, so I finally have a chance to check back in here. So here you go....lol.... a year on the farm.

Well, I'll actually start back around last Dec 14. When we had to bring the cows home, a little earlier than planned. It had snowed and blown enough that we couldn't really get out to them anymore and we had to take the tractor and snowblower to get to them. They didn't really want to leave, but we finally convinced them

Once home, we were into feeding.

They stayed at their winter grounds til mid Feb, when we had a big thaw. Since we start calving around the 5th of March, it was easier to bring them home than to fight with the ice and water

And calving season started a little early with a bang, on Feb 28

It was a little cool to start out, but with our new barn, we can keep enough cows inside to keep things warm

But things soon warmed up, and it was a good calving season overall

And then, I had this little sweetie born in May. Canadian Warmblood Filly

The main herd finished calving at the end of April, and the herd we lease started about the first of May
And the calves were growing well

Calving season basically ended the way it started
2017-06-12_001_2017-06-12_013.jpg

And we Synched about 100 head and turned bulls in with them

and we also turned the Char boys out

Then this guy came along in mid June, he's AQHA
2017-06-14_001_2017-06-14_030_533x800.jpg

And the calves continued to grow

Haying season was soon upon us. And as dry as it had been, we had a pretty good cut

I managed to do a little horse showing,

Then it was time to preg check cows and weigh calves
IMG_4021_(800x533).jpg

20171107_122928_800x618.jpg

And chase cows
IMG_4595_(800x533).jpg

20171016_111415_800x600_2.jpg

And haul cows
20171016_111438_800x600.jpg

We weaned our steers early, our weights were quite a bit higher than in the past few years
IMG_4017_(800x618).jpg

IMG_4023_(800x619).jpg

And eventually all the calves were weaned and cows turned out on the fall pasture.
20171111_102718_(800x619).jpg

We put in a Solar Water System, which we are really happy with.
20171105_122013_800x619.jpg

We've got a few calves and bred heifers around the yard

And the other day we moved the main herd to the corrals and hauled them all to their winter pasture. Got the last load unloaded in the dark. The girls were quite ready to come home

The main herd was very happy to see that we brought their water system to them
20171219_165342_(800x619).jpg

And they were quite enticed by the idea of HAY

Lol. All they need is a good meal and some windbreak.

Beautiful pictures. Love the Warm Blood filly.
So you got a Blue Road --- will you breed to a BR Shorthorn? or Plus?
Explain your water tank - very interesting. In the 2nd picture, it doesn't appear there is any fencing to keep cattle away from mechanism???

I'm not sure yet what we'll breed her to. She's 75% Shorthorn 25% Angus. The options are Red Shorthorn, Red Angus or our home raised Black Angus (I was hoping he'd be red...But he was too nice not to keep).

It is a solar powered system. We dug a well in a pasture that doesn't have power. The trough is insulated. The pump can draw water up to 60', and it drains back so the water line doesn't freeze. It operates on a float system.

So far it has worked well. The last few days it has been below -30C and we've had to break ice in the trough, but that's it. There are 250 cows drinking on it now.

In the second photo, we were just setting it up in the winter pasture. The cows were impatiently waiting for us to get it going. There's a fence around it now.

#84? she is mostly Angus. Some longhorn back there somewhere, but her mother was a polled red and white and her sire was Angus.

Beautiful pics!! Your husband is a smart man, riding the quad and giving you the horse. I've had horses, and motors are much more predictable!!

Lol... I've found that most of the time when you get hurt, whether horse or bike.... it's your own fault.
