So...let's try this again.
It has been a rather busy year here. The cow herd is growing, and the weather has been warm, well up til the last few days anyways. And there's never an end to projects on the farm. But, finally, with the cold weather, I feel no need to do anything more than necessary, so I finally have a chance to check back in here. So here you go....lol.... a year on the farm.
Well, I'll actually start back around last Dec 14. When we had to bring the cows home, a little earlier than planned. It had snowed and blown enough that we couldn't really get out to them anymore and we had to take the tractor and snowblower to get to them. They didn't really want to leave, but we finally convinced them
Once home, we were into feeding.
They stayed at their winter grounds til mid Feb, when we had a big thaw. Since we start calving around the 5th of March, it was easier to bring them home than to fight with the ice and water
And calving season started a little early with a bang, on Feb 28
It was a little cool to start out, but with our new barn, we can keep enough cows inside to keep things warm
But things soon warmed up, and it was a good calving season overall
And then, I had this little sweetie born in May. Canadian Warmblood Filly
The main herd finished calving at the end of April, and the herd we lease started about the first of May
And the calves were growing well
Calving season basically ended the way it started
And we Synched about 100 head and turned bulls in with them
and we also turned the Char boys out
Then this guy came along in mid June, he's AQHA
And the calves continued to grow
Haying season was soon upon us. And as dry as it had been, we had a pretty good cut
I managed to do a little horse showing,
Then it was time to preg check cows and weigh calves
And chase cows
And haul cows
We weaned our steers early, our weights were quite a bit higher than in the past few years
And eventually all the calves were weaned and cows turned out on the fall pasture.
We put in a Solar Water System, which we are really happy with.
We've got a few calves and bred heifers around the yard
And the other day we moved the main herd to the corrals and hauled them all to their winter pasture. Got the last load unloaded in the dark. The girls were quite ready to come home
Then ivomeced them, the next morning
And moved the last group of cows over to the winter pasture
The main herd was very happy to see that we brought their water system to them
And they were quite enticed by the idea of HAY
And there you have it. A year in the life...
Oh... and I got a nice Christmas present from my husband!
