As expensive as fertilizer is; where is your money better spent?

A ton of fertilizer or a ton of salt limited feed?

I don't know what pasture mix is either??? What is it and what are the comaritive prices?

I fertilized our hay field 2 weekends ago with 22-11-22 and it was $284 per ton.

pasture miv is like 40%rye grass 40% clover 20% singletarty peas or any combinenation of winter grass seeds mixed in 1 sack all was remember with clover you have inknoculate to get the seeds to sprout scott

If you plant more grasses you will be compounding the need for fertilizer. The legumes will put some nitrates back into the soil (I think this is why they have to be innoculated) But they won't put back the other nutrients you need. Plus the native grasses and new grasses need the fertilizer to get a good stand. Planting more will not solve your problem. You will be ahead to fertilize what you have then to just add more. If money wasn't a problem I would fertilize to your soil samples (provided you took them) and overseed with a legume variety. IMO.

I would still go with the fertilizer. The effects of the fertilizer will be seen long after the feed is gone.

i agree, good grass is the best feed imo..

Also, I don't have any facts to back this up but I know you will see more pounds of gain attributed to putting out a ton of fertilizer at 200 lbs to 10 acres then you will see feeding a ton of salt limited feed. Remember aprox 20% of the feed will be salt that doesn't put pounds on your animals. So now you have only 1600 lbs of feed.
