Use to be the poorest state in the union. Haven't checked to see if that's still true or not but welfare buys a lot of votes.

I read a couple of days ago that Mississippi was at the bottom and Louisiana next to last in numbers of people in poverty.
Our governor is always going on about budget problems and what bad shape we are in. Yet he goes to other states and talks about how great the economy is doing in Louisiana.
Go figure.

Both of those states are probably close. Looked it up and NM was 5th with per capita income of a little over $17,000 per year. That will qualify for a lot of welfare.
