3.5 million Poinsettias

Took a tour yesterday of a 35 acre greenhouse growing poinsettias. This place is located about 5 miles from Paris, Ky.

Dave: do you mean the facility is a total of 35 acres? Not 35 acres under greenhouse.

They have 35 acres under roof, they are going to add 10 next year. All of those poinsettias will go to Lowes in 10 states. They are getting ready to start spring flowers next week. I ask the person giving the tour if they grow mums, he said that Lowes forces them to grow mums. They make nothing on mums. They make their money in the spring, growing flowers for Lowes.

Reason I asked about the mums was an acquaintance grew poinsettias and his fall crop was always mums followed by the poinsettias so I was curious if this was a common rotation. He never got into the big store market and kept his sales within 100 miles and seemed to do pretty good with it.

Those houses a beautiful when they are filled and in bloom.
