When working cattle in a headgate, do you give the shot in the neck on the backside of the headgate (the body side) or the head side of the headgate?

Also,do you seperate your cows from your larger (300-500#s) calves before running then through the work chute?

Regarding working cattle in a headgate, I posted a related question on this beginners board on 4/9/03. The subject was "IM Shots - How to restrain cow w/ headgate?" I received some good feedback. You might want to go back a few pages and look at it.

The problem with running calves thru chute along with cows is that a cow might injure a calf. Also, if your chute is the standard 26" wide, the 300-500# calves will sometimes turn around, which clogs things up. Calves usually get a different set of shots than cows and it is easier to keep track of "who gets what" when they go thru separately. Because of all these things, we try to run cows & calves thru separately.

Exactly the information I was looking for, and I thought I had read most every post. The gate sounds like it works well keeping the cow stretched back. I ordered a Priefert model 91 auto/manual headgate, have heard these gates are wonderful. Thanks, and I have also learned much from reading these posts.. I pulled the archives, but could get none to open.

The 91 is a great headgate, just make sure you keep the sliding parts lubed with light oil. It also works best to leave it set to catch the smallest animal then you can open it a little for a larger one. If a small one slips in it can shoot right through before you have a chance to catch it.
