$1,000.00 for long bred and recently vacinated 5 year old registered angus is not a bad price as long as you like them. I'm in Tennessee and have seen commercial black baldy first calf heifers bring as much as $1,650.00/pair. If you like these cattle and are willing to pay then go for it. I agree that sale barn cattle for less money aren't worth the difference unless they are young, have a calf on the ground (over 2 months old) and you have a place to keep them away from your herd for 4-6 weeks and they or the calves don't get sick or make your herd sick.
