1 down and 10 to go/ 8 down 3 to go

Good start to my Wednesday! First calf out of one of the 11 bred heifers . Hereford/ angus cross heifers bred to our ultra black heifer bull . View attachment 55977
You could drive the wheels off a brand new truck looking, but I don't think you'd find a better pair. That is a great cross. Here's hoping the other 10 turn out as well.

Getting taxes done this am so I made my morning heifer check about 6 am this morning. Could not find the heifers calf . She had been right with it all day yesterday. Looked and looked . Her bag was strutted and she was with the rest of the heifers. Finally got out of the truck and walked the fence line . Finally found him lying behind a blow down tree limb ! I wouldn't have been too concerned but yesterday when I found him there was a coyote standing close to him and momma. I figured eating the afterbirth.

This morning as I was driving out to feed I passes a cow who was bagged up. As I finished and turned I passed her again. Number 30, looking closer I thought it will be a day or two. That was at 7:15. A little after 10:00 I ran out on the quad. Number 30 was right about where I saw her last. Brand new calf up and looking to suck. That is the 40th calf. Only 20 more to go. Drove down the feed row and spotted several more candidates to calf in the next couple days. I would like to be finished before April 1 but I know that isn't going to happen.

This makes 44 total . Don't have an exact count but more bulls than heifers so far . Last year we had more heifer calves

Ours have been odd outcomes. 2 years running we had mostly bull calves. Last year was about even. This year we have all heifers, so far. Now I have to make some choices soon. I'm keeping lil red from last year, the rest are going to sale. That was easy. This year I have 2 out of 4 that are beautiful! All steers in years past, have been sold for freezer beef. Hope to do that again. It aint easy when they aint black.....

# 3 on the ground since morning check . Sorry no momma pic . She may have to go to the chute . Mothering calf but not liking the nursing thing . She's an angus , limo cross from our other herd . Biggest framed heifer with a beautiful udder . Heifer calf , solid black . Momma is licking it and moved another heifer away from it . Calf is getting a little before she turns or a light kick to say that tickles

First time mommas will just about turn your hair gray, or grayer in my case!

Two more today. One I saw is a bull. The other needs a closer inspection to determine the sex. That will probably occur tomorrow. I had to herd the mother of the one who had the bull calf away from the river before she calved. Did that and another one who is close to calving. Don't need any wobbly new calves there. The bank is steep and the river is up and running hard. Irrigation meeting today they said there is a high water coming soon. Lots of snow pack in the mountains and it is warming up.

Got busy yesterday and didn't tag the 2 born yesterday. I knew there was 2 more born earlier today. Went out to tag the 4 and found another brand new one. So tagged 5. The heifers gained ground today. 5 calves, 4 heifers and only the 1 bull I had already was a bull. That makes 25 bulls and 20 heifers. B said that he sold a group of last spring black heifers for $2,440. Might just have to hold these black heifers over.
