Sold a fat Holstein freemartin. Didn't have a scale close after we loaded her. Sold 1/4's to buddies. Market has been 90 cents or so on them and wanted some for my time and trucking and they agreed to $1/# live weight. Now I'm only going to get a hanging weight on her. What's fair $ amount now?

1400 lbs. live weight at $1.00 = $1400
1400 - 60% dress = 840 lbs. hanging.
$1400 divided by 840 lbs. = $1.67 per pound hanging weight.

Where are you getting $1.67? Around here is $1.04 hanging

Surely not, fed cattle on the hoof are worth around $1.20. Good slaughter cows should hang 1.04 +

The OP said they had agreed to $1.00/lb live weight. So I just worked with that. Maybe made a mistake in my math but I don't think so.

If selling a beef steer based off market price, I would charge $2.05/lb. and that would include a bit extra for trucking.

My local commercial packer's bid on Friday was 1.20 live. $1.80 base (choice, yg 2-3) on the rail. $0.08 back for Select. $0.40 premium for Prime.

I charge 2.50/lb. Hanging weight. They pay processing so they can get whatever cuts or extras they want. That's fat steers weighing 1000-1300lbs in NE Oklahoma

The man showed you the math - easy to follow
hanging weight 60% of live weight
live weight 1,000 lbs x $1 lb = $1,000
60% of 1,000 lbs = 600 lbs
$1,000 divided by 600 = $1.6666 lb

The question was:
IF selling a finished heifer for $1 lb live what is the equivalent hanging weight?
Please explain why you think $1.04 hanging weight = $1.00 lb live

It would take a hanging weight of 96.15% to = $1.04

But Kenny, the man clearly stated fed Holstein heifers bring 90 cents in Iowa
not 1.20

Top colored fed steers here in Minnesota last week 1.15 top heifers 1.12
top holstein steers .97
Good slaughter cows in Mn bring 1.10 hanging

Maybe the single prime yield grade 1 CAB str in the sale barn. Tyson's live bid last wk was $1.08 off the farm.
The packers are dragging their feet. Using Covid as an excuse to not run any extra. May be true may be not. Dressed meat is up, live cattle are just trending sideways.

And when selling custom slaughter its all in how good of a Salesperson the owner is. I laughed at a friend selling grass fed until he told me he gets 4.50 a lb hanging. Hard to laugh at that.
