Dumb question - need intelligent answer plz

Murray Grey is the breed and the ranch is located in CA. Like I said, I have been all over and I have seen some good bulls, just not what will work for me, or what I want. There may be one out there between me and California and if anyone has some names, please let me know! Thanks everyone...

Dumb question - need intelligent answer plz

Everyone brings up valid concerns and I thank you for that. Still contemplating, but I would bring my dad with on the trip....he is a recently retired long-haul driver and very capable mechanic. As to the question why I would truck all the way out there for one darn bull yearling. Quite...

    Burdizzo VS Cutting

It is our preference to wait until weaning or first frost at least before cutting. We gave up the whole banding at birth many years ago. I would like to consider using the Burdizzo; my husband has doubts... he doesn't know why he has doubts, just that we have cut for years. I think it is a...

Dumb question - need intelligent answer plz

One of those questions that seems like it should be common sense, but then you question your sense! :D Michele PS I am contemplating (seriously) driving our 94 Ford F150, 2 wheel drive, 6 cyl, 5 spd, that has 246,000 miles on it with a little 2 horse trailer to pick up a yearling. I trust...

Dumb question - need intelligent answer plz

Thanks! Is there a way to put a bull on a train for shipping? I wonder if this would be less expensive than trailering out and back... Thoughts? Thanks again! Michele

Dumb question - need intelligent answer plz

The longest distance I have hauled cattle is probably 250 miles (5 hours), and I know that is not easy on them. They seem to be quite tired and tend to lay around for extended period upon arrival. How do you successfully haul one animal for 2000 miles? Thanks for any input! Michele

    Preconditioned steers forecast

I will say that at any point any animal can get sick. But, based on our own experiences, (*knocking on wood*), when we keep our own animals through weaning til whenever, I have hard time remembering one getting sick, let alone having to treat a bunch. When we have purchased "weaned", and I use...

    1st MG X from Locker

We just start making a list of what everyone wants 1/4 or 1/2, and as the animal gets finished we start heading down the list. We sell by the hanging weight, and they pay the processing. Michele

    1st MG X from Locker

This calf is the one I thought was a "rat-tail" she looked so pathetic, she did always have a coat of hair, just not much of one. I did not have high hopes for her, but she finished beautifully. This pic was taken when she was 2 - 3 weeks old. I also did not sell her as weaned, cuz I thought...

    1st MG X from Locker

We grind cob corn, add some oats, mineral and salt. As they get closer to finished we then start adding in a bit of shelled corn to it. We then put it in a "steer stuffer" so they can eat whenever they want. It is amazing how they tend to "self-time" their feedings with the corn. They seem...

    1st MG X from Locker

The 1st of our MG X fats that we sold came back with rave reviews. I would just like to thank the cattle today boards for introducing me to the MG breed. I believe it was one of our wisest choices, and those have been very few in the years since we started raising beef. ;-) One couple, the...

    Tips for permanent waterer?

In line with the fence, you doubled your watering holes. Put in the electric, not sure where "driftless" is ;-) But we are in W. Central. We have never had the Ritchie freeze yet, but we have electric supplied to it and use it. Too many times over the years we have had to unthaw...

    Cattle Cost to slaughter

How about trying this to get your feet wet. Buy 3 weaned steers and finish to slaughter, sell all 3 minus what you want for yourself. 1 steer will pay for the purchase of the 3, 1 steer will pay for the feed/upkeep (sans many problems), and 1 will be profit/freezer full (keep in mind angie's...

    Installing auto waters and bulls

We installed our waterers on the outside of the fence. On both sides of the waterer we used old utility poles for the posts and used a metal cross-arm across the two posts above where they would stick their head through and then a metal cross-arm at the height of the waterer. The waterer is...

    Show me your culls...

Those three got loaded, but it was a hair raising event. That black "skittish" cow, turned into a KILLER COW in the corral. Of course hubby got called out, so that left me and begging to hubby's brother to come over to help. Various kids located on the outside of the corrals, specifically at...
