    hi everyone

just dropping in to say hello. It has been a long time since I've been on. Tonight was 19 months since my son/only child died and it has been a very difficult time (understatement). I am very lucky to have a good hubby. I have been told by other parents who lost a child that within 5 years, we...

This is why I love cubes...

That's what we used to get at TS but now all we can get is sweet feed (small pellets). They do like it but when I fed it by hand recently, one of them accidentally got her teeth on me (thru my glove, hurt but didn't quite break skin. She was as surprised as me). Wish we could find the bigger...

This is why I love cubes...

Ok, this IS the beginner's board, so I'm gonna come right out and admit that when y'all say "cubes" I used to think I knew what you meant but now I'm not sure whether there's a defined/commercial product as such???? Is it a catch-all phrase? (pic? link?) We used to be able to get cube-like...

    How long to wean calves?

My reply vanished. ??? Anyway, we put wean flaps on for 2 weeks, then separate calves from mamas for about a month; reunite them just before Christmas. (We can't practically run 2 herds all winter. The electric bill for one tank heater can hit $150/mo; surely don't need to pay for two, for a...

    Auto catch squeeze chute

TBH, we have a preifert with an auto-catch function but we tried it once and it just seemed to spook them too much. We always run different sizes in together a lot so usually we're adjusting the squeeze as we go anyway

    poll

A fellow Northerner, I see! Trying to goose one more winter out of my 2004 F150 ("the plow queen"). Not ready to turn the 2yo truck into a farm/plow truck yet, but the ol' girl is rusting apart at the seams.

    Close call

I know most of you have been driving tractors etc since you were in your car seats up on the tractor (ha--I kid. But only about you ever being in a car seat lol), but for those of us who came to farm equipment (etc) later in life, I have gotten some benefit from the Tractor Mike episodes on...

    Close call

I'm a bad combination of my parents. My dad was (is) a total hellion. Back when they didn't have bars over the passenger seats, he would change cars on a roller coaster. At the top of the incline! I have an adventurous streak but am also a worrywart--bad combo

    Close call

I believe both tires on the left were up (a good bit); I was angled so could only see the back one. Came up a good bit and hovered. I instinctively yelled his name (that's all); it hovered for what seemed like forever. When I asked him later, he said he was staying calm and making sure he didn't...

    Close call

Hubs was feeding a round baleage bale this afternoon to tide over the piggies (ie, cows) until we can move them. Just as he lifted the bale up with the bale grabber, he hit a rock we'd never noticed before (on a slight slope), and the left rear tire on the tractor came up off the ground a good...

    baleage for winter?

Jeanne, how do you test yours? (Re your question of what went into the baleage, it was a field that was seeded back 2 yrs ago. I'm looking for the label for the seed. It was a mixture of grass, bit of clover and alfalfa I think....).

    baleage for winter?

Hi Steve, We have not tested it. I know we should....

    baleage for winter?

Thanks Jeanne! Helpful to have a local perspective too. Our vet confirmed what you're saying too. I think we will still try to get a few more small squares cut if it ever stops raining every other day. We like to be able to toss them a few squares to tide them over sometimes, or to lure them...

    baleage for winter?

Soooo...some of you may remember we baled our own hay this year, for the first time. Weeeeelll, let's just say that between the cranky weather and cranky equipment, it's been interesting. Net result at the moment is that we have more than enough wrapped rounds of baleage, but far less small hay...

    Cut or keep?

We usually do steer at birth or within a few days. But we moved our calving season up this year and we had a couple bull calves born in pretty gnarly weather, so we decided to wait. The vet will castrate when she does preg checks. (We band when we do it at birth).

    Cut or keep?

Just for the record, I agree that most registrable males should be cut! As noted above, we have sold exactly one registered bull, as a calf, to a guy who was going to put him thru his paces to see if he stacked up. We don't keep them past 6 months because we don't run a separate herd usually, so...

    Cut or keep?

Thanks all for the honest feedback. Nesi, he's just turning 5mos. Jeanne, we do not usually sell bulls. We acknowledge that it is not a particular expertise of ours, at this point. (We did sell one last year to someone who saw him and wanted him). We also don't keep one; we are strictly AI...

    Cut or keep?

I wrote a response but it didn't go through. Thanks for the feedback! Any other commenters wanna weigh in?

    Cut or keep?

testicles, that is! Bull calf born late March, great AI sire and grandsire, good mama. Been only on grass. Haven't registered him yet; need to decide this week if he gets cut next Sat. See anything that would lead to a strong recommendation to cut him?

Hay season off to a great start

Jeanne, you have me worried now. We're a bit east of you and had similar issues with the wet "summer" last year. First/only cutting around Sept-Oct. Ended up brush-hogging several acres in Oct. that we are getting ready to make baleage from (our first time. We're gonna cut/rake, a neighbor will...
