    Moving Weak Cattle in Water

I had to bring them square bales by boat a few times. Water was finally down enough I made my first trip on land last Thursday the 8th. Overall I am glad to have them. I lost one heifer that disappeared. Figure water got her. Lost another heifer Friday got sick after water went down. Got one...

    Moving Weak Cattle in Water

Jonboat is worth its weight in gold around here all of a sudden. Just happened to run into a rescue crew brought me out there today from New York, Arizona and I can't remember the other. Glad they helped me out.

Less than a foot on a levy. They don't have much ground at that height. And doesn't seem like water is draining.

    Moving Weak Cattle in Water

Any ideas how I can move 8 cows 1 mile down the road in 4' to 5' of water? Afraid to push them in deep water because they haven't eaten much, losing condition, and been standing in water for 6 days. Can we some how tow them w a boat? Or is the only way to swim them? Wondering if there is any...

    Bullied Heifers

I get what your saying about spreading widely. I can spread feed wide, but they will eat it together and move together. I can have several bales of hay out, they will eat together at one or two bales and move to the others later. If the bullied one happens to eat at a bale alone, the others will...

    Bullied Heifers

The other thought is, maybe I should keep the heifers separate for longer. I will usually wean the calves off 7-10 months depending on circumstance. I will pen them and feed them 3 to 4 months and turn them back in with the cows. Maybe I should keep them another month or two separate.

    Bullied Heifers

The other common factor is... this happens with calves I keep. If I bring in a new heifer, no problems.

    Bullied Heifers

I have tried about everything. More troughs, feeding separate, different pens, getting rid of cattle, both the aggressive and the weak. I fed them in open pasture, in pens of different sizes. Ever since I downsized is when this started to happen. I am wondering if being such a small group is the...

    Bullied Heifers

I always have one that is pushed around and stays skinny. I have gotten rid of aggressive boss cows, have gotten rid of the poor doer giving me trouble, and the next in line takes its place. These are usually heifers I will keep. Last year I turned out a weaned steer with the herd I kept for...

Does anybody balance their checkbook anymore?

I budget all bills/expenses by pay period. Leave some room for misc expenses. The only thing I reconcile is the farm expense log vs farm account at the end of the year to make sure I didn't miss any receipts for tax purposes.

Hay and feed is about the only thing I can think of.

    Electric branding irons

I have one that is 5". It's too big to use on anything other than mature cattle. If your going to brand calves I would stay closer to 3" at most.

It's a shame I agree. It willl be a good lesson though when he keeps working and things turn for the better.
