    Replacement females???

Well --- depends on the BREED of cattle. There are some breeds that really don't have any "known" defects and others that have LOTS of defects. Some breeds have AI bulls in stud with acknowledged known defects. People still use them on "clean" females. I wouldn't knowingly use a bull with a...

    Replacement females???

It is only called "in-breeding" when it is not successful. It is called "line-breeding" when it works out. Genetic defects are "generally" recessive - this means the sire and the dam have to carry the SAME genetic defect - and - they BOTH have to pass it to the offspring. Odds are in your...

    Replacement females???

TC - I was just going to ask you if you had colder weather than normal for you. My calves are always heavier than other farms using same genetics. My cattle don't have any weather protection (like a nice bedded barn!!!) and I have large calves. I "expect" my heifers to have a 75-95# calf...

    Replacement females???

TC - that surprises me. I realize mine are Simmental and yours are Angus, but you have good stout cows. I "expect" my 24 months old heifers to have 80-95# calves unassisted. I have never pelvic measured any of my females. On "age". 24 month old heifers will "expand" much better than 30-36...

    Replacement females???

Wow - when I opened this thread there were 10 pages. I read them - some posts closer than others. LOCATION is the biggest factor to all our managements. My cattle definitely do not get chased by cougars or bears!! My location does great with larger cows. We have tons of grass and grow all the...

    Hello from Deep East Texas

I worry about calves getting in them. This year, I had a calf bed down in one, and with the cows eating around him, the top layers slid off and landed on him - with his head sticking out of the feeder - so the weight of the hay killed him. Ugh!!! I was sick. Bad enough losing one to sickness...

    Hello from Deep East Texas

Good work. Sooo - is it upside down? and you will be putting in more divider bars?? My calves would be right inside of that - even yearlings.

    Blue Sky

We were almost 60F yesterday and today. Going to be snowing and down to teens on Tuesday. Crazy weather. Hard on cattle.

LOL - I'm not a "hair" person. Guess I should not have tried to answer. Yes, we use filler pellets - Ultra Full & Depth Charge.

    Overly Extroverted Bull

I show cattle to advertise my farm. I'm also very involved with the junior program. Been working with juniors, running shows, putting on clinics for 30+ years. I have a family of 3 siblings that we have been sponsoring for going on our 7th year. Kids that don't live on a farm.

    Uh - yes.

    Overly Extroverted Bull

I don't show steers! Steer shows are a whole different ball game (clubbie shows). Talk about working the hair, special feed formulas, special shampoos, etc., etc. I prefer "show and blow". But, obviously, at the bigger shows, we do fit them up - but very light. Some of those show steers...

    Overly Extroverted Bull

Stranger - danger! Just the sound of a stranger's voice can throw the cattle off. We play a radio very loud in our barn, because if we have our show string in the barn and a stranger entered, they were really scared. Strange VOICES throw them off. So, now, different voices are so scarry...

    Calves

Either you have extremely high strung pedigrees, or you have not been a part of their life back when they were born. I have never seen a herd that the calves respond like you are describing, except a herd that never sees people.

    Hello from Deep East Texas

So, backtrack to me putting 8 cows close to calving in the barn. I already said first cow had a set of twin heifers. That was at 4pm. By 4am we had 5 of the 8 calved. Another 1 calved later in the day. Woohoo, babies everywhere.
