What are you using to apply pour on’s?

For fly control we hang rubs and charge them up with diesel and fly treatment, and all cattle walk under, rub there faces on it etc. We also spray them down if flies get bad (water/1 gal sprayer and fly treatment). sometimes we drop a little feed in a tight circle and stand on back of feed truck...

How much do you expect from 1st calf heifers?

That's a tricky question. We have had great looking heifers raise lil dinks and we have had heifers raise some monster calves. I'd say this... Out of first calf heifers it's more important to get live/healthy calves and get mom bred back with the cow group she is going to be blended in with as a...

    Cost of baling hay

That's with no fertilizer. That's pulling up, swathing, baling and leaving. $40/bale. Bales will be good 1500#. Around here if you buy hay it's $80-$120/bale. We usually stock pile hay every couple years just so we have extra. We don't need to feed much hay in winter. It's just nice to have. And...

    Creek crossing

Been an odd year for sure. Our cattle/calves usually slick off early to late April here. We just fly sprayed and wormed about 40 head today and they were mostly hairy as they could get. It's finally gotten hot here so they shod get to shedding now

    Cost of baling hay

That cost is way lower than it is here. We have a couple Meadows we are going to cut and hay guy quoted me $40/bale. We should get 75-80 bales per meadow.

    Cattle loan

Fence is right! I was at the sale yesterday and some middle aged bred cows and pairs sold for $1000. If a guy had sone extra pastures and some cash, he'd be in a good good place. It is definitely a great time to buy cows and pairs.

    Start them young

Love that story. This January I helped my 4 year old grandson flip his first calf and vaccinate. He sure had a big smile on his face. Made me feel good to talk him thru it all and watch him "be tuff" lol. He sure did strut after. Pic of us on the calf is on my nightstand.

    Cow behavior question

Ours are the opposite. Entire herd take possession of every calf. It's the "takes a village", saying with all my cattle. Haven't had coyote issues in some time now.

    calf umbilical

Calf looks fine to me. We have some balancer calves that look exactly like that. Most will shrink up and be minimal by weaning.

    Heifer/Bull ratios

Same here! I've got several older great momma cows that raise heavy steer calves that have never given us heifers. I'd love to get some off them before they fade out.

    Heifer/Bull ratios

We are 50/50 and CALVED OUT! WHOOO. Took 3 years of culling and backing up calving but we called out fast this year. Last year we were 90/10 heifers to bulls. Year before 80/20 bulls. Crap shoot

    New calf

Lol yessir, for sure. If I'm not mistaken we still have those heifers in question.

    New calf

We Lutylase all heifers at weaning regardless. We have had bulls jump fences and jump back, or breed heifers thru the fence. Our Gelbvieh cross heifers can cycle very early. Get them checked for sure.

    New calf

We have a small pen next to our chute. It's handy for many reasons, but especially for confused heifers. We will pen up a first time momma and put her in the chute 3x a day and push her calf over to her bag. After 3 times the calf is usually standing there waiting to eat. It is time consuming...

    Pasture leases in central Texas

How many can you run yearly on 600 acres there? I'm in the TX Panhandle and rule of thumb is 20-25 per section (640 aces) year round depending on rain of course.
