    Hello from Deep East Texas

Travlr, there were tornados in his county yesterday. I messaged him and heard back that the storms passed to his northwest.

    Grow your own or buy?

No one has mentioned being able to depreciate a purchased animal as compared to treating a home raised cow the same as a calf when it is time to cull. I do both (buy and keep heifers) . In my small herd, it actually makes more sense to buy. 1) You don't have to change bulls as often; 2)...

    Can ryegrass cause scours?

Bahia and dallisgrass are cousins. The seedhead of both can cause ergot poisoning. The seedhead on bahia makes a V (like in Victory cause it is winning).

    Can ryegrass cause scours?

The reason I asked about varieties is because perennial ryegrass is a type not a variety. Many of the perennial types are turf type grasses. In Texas, all ryegrass will act as an annual because of our heat.

    Can ryegrass cause scours?

You planted enough ryegrass to double the number of cattle. (40 acres / half open = 20 acres of which you planted 80% which would be 16 acres). You are going to have way more ryegrass next spring than you have mouths to consume it. That creates the problem of shading out your summer grass...

    futures

It is a battle of bulls and bears. The bulls say with a smaller cow herd and fewer cattle, prices should go higher. The bears say we have got the meat as high as consumers will pay. All the slaughter volume is 5 to 6% below last year, yet box beef prices are struggling. To add to the misery...

    Tell me what you think

I have seen a lot of those calf raisers in East Texas. Wasn't crazy about your choice of bulls to use on them, but they showed you they can raise a good calf. Find a Simmental, Charolais, Gelbvieh or even a Limousin and sell all the calves (terminal). As our friend Caustic would say, they...

When is ideal time to turn out bulls

As everyone said, it depends on when you want your calves born, I live in East Texas and prefer late fall calves and I do not want anything born after tax day (April 15). I had left bull out last year and had a few May and a couple of summer calves. Bull came out July 20 and won't go back in...

Which one would you feed, liquid feed or protein tubs for bulls on pasture

In East Texas, we use bermuda and bahia as our main grass. It grows from about a month after frost in the spring until a killing freeze in the fall. In the spring and early summer it is great and will get cows fat. As it gets hot and dry, the quality drops and we supplement with protein to...

    Waterline plumbing question

The plan where the lines split off offers some advantages. If you put in some shutoff valves at the junction, you could isolate an area (2 paddocks) and have water in the rest. The other advantage to the split is water pressure should be better. I am concerned that the last water point in the...

The product of pushing lbw for a couple of generations.

Is it to early to fertilize

It depends on location and what type of grass. Here in East Texas, bermuda has greened up but will not actively grow until our night time temperatures stay at 58 or warmer. It was 45 here for an overnight low.

    Hello from Deep East Texas

It may commonly be misused in hayfields. The label says do not feed treated foliage. I called the manufacturer because a friend asked how long to wait and I could not find any information on the label. Was told one full grazing season before he could use the forage. Consider Outrider for...

    Hello from Deep East Texas

Welcome to CT. I loved the Nacogdoches area when I went to SFA. If bermuda is you grass for hay, just remember to put out as much potassium as you do nitrogen and you will be ok. Check the label on the MSMA (I believe it is not cleared for pastures or hay fields) as it is used in ornamental...

Is this hay combo Ok for Longhorns?

Maybe or maybe not. As Kenny Thomas said it depends on maturity when cut. Without a forage test, you are only guessing if the hay is meeting the nutritional needs of your cattle. I test every cutting. Hay is fed and supplemented if needed based on stage of production of the cow.
