How much protein do I need to feed.

Agree with you TB. I was mainly commenting to the issue with the bulls of the original post.

How much protein do I need to feed.

Higher protein is not for weight gain. The key to weight gain is carbs and fat. Think about it - if you wanted to go on a diet, you'd cut out the carbs and fat. Protein is critical in diets but it is not the factor in weight gain.

    Vitamins for beef cattle.

    Agree with Lucky.

What protein feed would you choose.

Why spend money on extra protein when it's not needed? Too much protein is a waste of money. If you're wanting to fatten up your calves, they need more fat/carbs - not protein. Review your feed ingredients wherever you purchase your feed. Look for the fat content in the feed versus the...

Can cattle eat to much mineral

I feel that if we were to do all things that is recommended by the ones speaking and writing all the articles that we would be broke as cattle producers. All the minerals, salt, protein tubs, hay and soil testing adds a lot of cost that may or may not be seen. I've kinda feel into the click of...

Contraband in feed....what is ok with you and why ?

I don't know where you're getting your feed but if I ever found any debris as you mentioned, I would no longer buy that feed again. Too much good feed out there to be having to go through it and pick out that stuff. My advice is to find another feed supplier.

    Steer overloaded on corn

Yes, strongly suggest the Probios. Just had one we had to administer this to. Gave her plenty of hay and waited a few days until she was back up and grazing around until we gave her more grain. Gradually giving her grain in the morning and then afternoon.

Is it important to have shelter for young calves outside, if so why?

I think it depends on you location and situation. Here in Ga, we don't shelter our cows / calves unless they are sick. Have somewhat mild winters and cattle survive OK. In Canada, I can see your point. I think you should do what gives you peace of mind. Wouldn't want to loose a calf or cow...

My cattle don't seem to like minerals

The reason I asked about how many head of cattle he had was because he mentioned that the mineral wasn't being consumed too fast. Two head are going to consume less than 50 head. I was just trying to determine what the consumption rate was. Yes, the cattle will hit the salt more than mineral...

My cattle don't seem to like minerals

At what rate are they consuming the mineral? And, how many cattle do you have? Rule of thumb that I have gone by is that the cattle should consume about 4 oz per day. Also, do you have salt blocks out for the cattle? Cattle crave salt so, they may be consuming more salt and staying away from...

    Grain solution.

Although I agree with your comment, we all have different situations that require feeding grain to our cattle in summer and winter. Being in the south (Georgia), our summers are very unpredictable. Four years ago, we had NO rain from May through August (and I do mean none). Then, when we got...

    New momma cows/extra feed

I agree on the bag mineral versus the tub. We weren't getting 3 weeks on a tub versus two bags on same amount of cows.

    Growing out Heifers

Decided to grow out some heifers this year to put back into the herd. Just wondering your thoughts on how much feed per day should be fed daily to get heifers to ideal weight for breeding. Currently around 600 - 625 lbs. Heifers are grazing on semi moderate grass but want to supplement feed...

    Mineral blocks

Good point - so best is always to read ingredient tag on the bag to be sure. I know Purina Wind & Rain loose mineral has salt added. The mineral tubs do not have salt added and if you use these then salt is needed. I'm a firm believer in the Purina R&W. I'm sure there are other good minerals...
