Any reason not to butcher yearling down with grass tetany?

Have a yearling bull that escaped with 4 other yearlings into a new pasture of fresh grass. They weren't "hungry" so grain wouldn't bring them in. Storm was coming in so fixed the gate and waited for them to come in under the shed & out of the rain to trap them. They were on grass less than 24...

    Obstructed throat...

Just a quick note on the beet pulp...hubby corrected me and it was a couple weeks ago when the beet pulp was mixed in the feed...so thats a non issue. Thanks Angus9259 for the reply... do it like I'm tubing? I won't risk shoving something into the lungs right?

    Obstructed throat...

Hey all, I have a yearling bull who I THINK might have a problem... This morning I put his grain in his stall and rather than "go to it" he stood there and spit out a hunk of partially chewed hay. I thought it was odd he didn't want his grain but decided to wait and see if it was gone tonight...

Use a cow lifter or not??

Thank you so much. I'm going to try later to get a video of her....just to share on her condition NOW vs. where we wind up. It might help someone down the road.

Use a cow lifter or not??

I did use the pitchfork to "motivate" her to move off a low spot so I could get her on deeper bedding. Last night I sat and watched her for about an hour... she was rotating side to side and MOVING her legs/feet/hip well. BUT...I didn't notice her chewing her cud at all... so I'm going to get...

Nes...you're a blast from the past too... good to see you're still here... I remember you being with me all through Granny's problems and birth of her twins... good to hear from you. Thanks for the encouragement.

Use a cow lifter or not??

Yes it is. I've had it twice now. Couple years ago my oldest cow had trouble with twins...we slinged her for several days but she started to prolapse and as she started to go further down hill we decided to induce labor and then put her down. Feel like I'm repeating the same thing...only this...

Use a cow lifter or not??

Sorry JMJ...I meant no disrespect to you but more a compliment to Dun...he's just been on here FOREVER!! I understand the concept..that it will PROVE to me whether she can get up..but just because she CAN...does it mean she SHOULD?

Use a cow lifter or not??

Dun, I know you've been on here FOREVER and I trust you... so let me ask... if I shock her, what am I looking to happen? With a shock she's going to jump up and then what? Tonight when the vet came at her, I would consider it the same as a shock... she lurched to the other side of the...

Use a cow lifter or not??

Thanks JMJ...no access to large floater tank... I WISH! The nearest one would probably be at one of the universities...we're very rural! No I have not shocked her. I don't own one. I'm not saying I WOULDN'T if it was absolutely necessary but she is moving all over the stall so haven't thought I...

Use a cow lifter or not??

More as I was thinking about it... Vet said if it was magnesium/selenium issue that I would not see ONE cow with this, but I would see several. This shouldn't be it because we have Wind & Rain mineral out 24/7...she also said with mag deficiency the cow would have a "shake" to her (not...

Use a cow lifter or not??

Hi all.. I have a cow that's down... To answer all the questions... she's 5 years old, pregnant with calf #4... due March 29 (AI). I had her seen by the vet today...she received Calcium/Selenium/Banamine, etc. "just because" (NO DEX). Because she has feeling in all extremeties including down her...

    Bringing a cow back...

NO. TexasBred and I were just talking... thinking back to when I used beet pulp in the past, it was when we were showing and we would feed it to add "fill" (just an appearance thing). He mentioned that the protein content of the beet pulp really isn't any better than good quality pasture... So...

    Bringing a cow back...

We get the shreds...its what the elevator has. I got a bag today...she had a scoop soaked and mixed with her grain. I guess i dont have to soak it... it makes me feel like im feeding her more...lol Going to worm her tomorrow. As for breed...shes Murray Grey...the only breed we raise. For...

    Bringing a cow back...

    Bringing a cow back...

Hi all! Just bought a cow with exceptional genetics...However she's in pretty bad shape. Owner just passed from cancer so no hard feelings...just too much for the family to deal with. But...my plan is to ease her onto grain and her own corral for some fresh grass. Anyone got any tricks for...

I had the pleasure of hosting an Amish couple and a Menonite couple in my home just over a year ago and it was a total pleasure... We consider them friends and I even got a HUGE box of noodles sent to me in "Thanks"...I find their life fascinating and as I stated before, I feel it an honor that...

    Summer pneumonia

Was going back through some old posts... you said you keep it on hand all the time for the show string... so I have a question... I gave the TSV to my show string in September.... and I had assumed that I would just booster it annually but what do you do? By your response it sounded to me like...
