    dead cow in pond

    Do you have any sort of contract? We have always drawn up a contract if/when we lease pasture or field for crops. It's for this reason exactly that we do a contract. So that we have an out if needed. I'd get it out then get him out.

    New momma cows/extra feed

    My lil grandson and I put out salt and mineral 2 days ago... We have had the perfect amount of rain... We are green green here. Mineral and salt are GONE! We always monitor salt and mineral every other day to twice a week at least ESPECIALLY when you get those big seasonal changes. 2 weeks ago...

    Growing out Heifers

    We typically retain heifers for breeding. Some go in our herd some are sold bred. As others have stated frame growth on green grass with some added weight is all I'd worry about right now. If you add too much supplement to them while on green grass you will probably end up with some real fat...

    Don't cuss the cold or rain.

    JMJ, last year this time I had a cull list for all pastures because for 7 1/2 months we got no snow, no rain, not even a dark colored cloud. This year we are so soggy i walk to check certain pastures. This weather is crazy. I'm not complaining, but at the same time I'm praying for y'all in the SE.

    Joint Ill

    JMJ, sorry to hear that. I think your doing all you can do. Never an easy thing to lose a calf after birth. Good luck.

    Some days i could do without.

    Hate to hear that. Happened to me last fall. Also palpated yesterday and 3 of the best momma cows out of the group (6yr olds) were open. Have always raised 600# calves. What do you do? Keep them or let them go. It's tuff

    Mineral blocks

    Kilroy, we mix loose salt with our loose mineral. If not, they will consume a bag in a day regardless of the need or time of year. Are you saying your mineral has enough of a salt limiter to where this doesn't happen with your cattle? Thanks.

    Mineral blocks

    I'm no expert in this, but you are right. We do see them eat less mineral during late spring thru mid summer. When we hit our late August slump in grass (due to heat and being dry), cows will consume a lot more mineral typically thru October. We begin typically feeding cake in November, which...

    Winter Feeding

    What is the protein content of your hay? In our area the minimal protein per feeding of cake is 20% @ 5#/hd every other day plus grazing if available or hay at around 8%.

    Winter Feeding

    When do you start feeding in the fall and when do you stop? Is there a date or is it 100% weather related?

    Winter Feeding

    I know everyone here has there own way or tweak on feeding during the winter months. So e due to geography, others because... Well... That's just how granddad did it lol. Total non opinionated post, just curious with this cold shot of air that plunges into the country from time to time if it...

    Mineral blocks

    We switched to loose salt and mineral a while back. It's pricey, but I like the results. I build my own mineral feeders with an 8' trough and roof overhead. So far it has kept majority of rain/snow out and our cattle/calves seem to be getting as much as they want without licking the blocks...

    Bull activity

    Nutrition = +Results

    Well like I said I'm no expert, just put some faith in some things and it has sure paid off. Several more calves since I posted this. It was 60 today and all those calves were running around and chasing after each other. So much more energetic than years past. We had a good laugh.

    Nutrition = +Results

    Im not an expert on nutrition in cattle operations by any means. However, in doing a lot of research in our grasses, soil, vaccinations etc the past 2 years and a little tweaking with mineral and feed, I believe we have really gotten on top of preparing our cows for breeding. We began by giving...

    If I have to start knitting sack jackets for my bulls I may sell out and just run yearlings 😜

    NEW BORN CALVES

    We try to catch them asap (within 2-3 days old), and give them a multimin90 shot and ear tag them according to sex with cows tag number written on it. After that we don't touch them until we work them at 2-3 months of age. Unless there's an issue we don't mess with them... That's what momma's...
