    Possible snake bite

I haven't noticed him tossing his head at all. He has had labored breathing, but the vet could hear nothing in his lungs. She said he had aspirated which is why he had all of the snot coming out of his nose.

    Possible snake bite

His eyes are running on both sides. He’s also drooling like crazy. I just gave him a steroid shot. That lump under his eye is hard. He’s going back to the vet as soon as I can get him in. I also searched him over good and didn’t find anything that appears to be a bite site. I’m now leaning...

    Possible snake bite

The photos aren’t great, but this is him this morning. He has some swelling under the left eye and he seems to act like his tongue and throat are swollen. His breathing is better, but his eyes are running like crazy.

    Possible snake bite

Hello all. I have a steer that weighs about 450 lbs that the vet suspects was bitten by a snake. I noticed him about a week ago and he had labored breathing, gray snot coming out of his nose and his eyes were swollen and watering like crazy. He was also very unsteady on his feet. At first I...

    Don't run your mouth.

I had a heifer show up lame a few weeks ago. I knew she was getting close to calving. She ended up with what the vet calls hip lock and was dragging her right rear leg. Had to drag her out of a pond that she managed to get into. Unfortunately, I found the calf and the coyotes beat me to it. I...

Ticks - Ticks and more Ticks

The ticks are bad out here in SW OK this year. They've been bad for a few years now. I haven't noticed any on the cows so far though. Mine got Ivermectin this spring, plus ear tags and I have a cattle oiler that we purchased last year. The cattle didn't really use it much that first year, but...

    Branding issue

Thanks for the info. I was trying to do it in one shot. That was probably my biggest problem. More patience needed on my part.

    Branding issue

I'm having issues with my cattle moving around too much when branding in the chute. I have a Preifert squeeze chute and electric branding iron. The cows are moving too much in the chute and it is causing the brand to smear. The cows will hunch up forward or drop their rear down (I'm putting the...

    Prolapse

She should calve soon. I doubt it will stay too. I'm hoping they can get her to the vet tomorrow. Then after she has this calf, it's time to go to the sale.

    Prolapse

Today we found one of my parents older cows with a vaginal prolapse. Unfortunately we couldn't get a vet out to look at her. I loaded her up and took her down to my place where I could get her in a chute. I cleaned the area up with iodine and just pushed it back in. It was really pretty easy...

    Fly prevention

I'm there with you. Fly tags work great, but are pretty expensive and only last for a couple of months. We bought a Lewis Cattle Oiler this year, but so far the cows are not using it,so I'm a little disappointed because they are not cheap.

    Foot rot

Forgot to add the most important part on my conclusion post. Somehow, whether by infection or the original injury, the cow has destroyed her tendons and ligaments. That's why she has to go. She'll never recover.

    Foot rot

I have a conclusion to this saga. I finally took the old girl to the vet today. He's not sure if it was foot rot, or a puncture wound. Whatever the cause, she had/has a nasty infection. The tendons and ligaments in that foot are destroyed. He suggested on getting rid of her as soon as she's...

    Foot rot

I finally got the cow into my lot where I could get a good look at the foot. This picture below is what I found. There was a hunk of something, almost felt like tendon or ligament, hanging out that I cut off. I probed around and didn't feel anything in there. Gave her some more antibiotics. I'm...

    Foot rot

I haven't been able to get her into the lot where I can secure her. Of course she's as far away from it as she can get. I'm going to try to get her tied down where I can get a closer look.

    Foot rot

Still swollen badly a week after treatment with Draxxin. She's walking a bit better but still looks bad.
