    Different mineral

I agree with Simme, it does not contain enough copper.

    Almost Weaning Time

Congratulations on graduating from vet school. We need vets that do mixed practice. Your cattle are impressive.

    Santa Gertrudis Bulls?

Brute, I understand where you are coming from. That bull on a set of Angus, Hereford or Red Angus cows will produce some good replacement females and the steer mates will sell well. If the cow herd has Brahman influence then you are spot on. You have to weigh the value of the replacement...

    Santa Gertrudis Bulls?

Here is a 15 month old bull in East Texas. Belongs to a small breeder close to Gilmer. He is out of a bull I raised and sold him.

    Santa Gertrudis Bulls?

That was true of all breeds then.

    Bull prospect

I prefer pairs because I don't get as many surprises. Too many Longhorn cross calves and lbw dinks buying bred cows unless it is a dispersal.

Purchasing heavy breds vs steers ?

You better refigure your cost of gain. Current closeouts are $1.40+ and projected closeouts are close to $1.20 due to expected lower corn costs. https://cattlereport.agcenter.com/

    Beefmaster Angus Cross

It depends on your location and environment. If you need the Brahman influence in the cow to be environmentally adapted then use the Beefmaster cow with an Angus bull. Fit your cow to your environment.

    Show me your herd bull

I couldn't get him to raise his head. I just rotated to this pasture after they had been off for a month.

Black hided cattle struggling with this heat

I had an opportunity to hear the CEO of the Texas Cattle Feeders address a Texas Farm Bureau conference this week. He said that this heat spell was the first of the year (early too) and most of the cattle had not shed their winter coats and acclimated. He said it was a perfect storm of...

Black hided cattle struggling with this heat

Watch this tour of Bar G Feedyard in the Texas panhandle, one of the largest. Notice there is not much or any shade. Feedyard cattle differ from cattle in pasture in they are fed to gain 3 to 4.5 lbs per day.

Black hided cattle struggling with this heat

That one sentence was the whole purpose of my original post.

    Montebelliard’s

Dairy breed. The grazing dairy down the road uses them. Red colored helps with Texas heat and butterfat content is better than Holstein.

    Gyr Cattle

Actually there were 4 strains - Guzerat, Gyr, Nelore, Indu-Brazil and Krishna Valley used in developing the American Brahman.

    Bought a bull

MARC has done a good bit of work on developing a way to compare EPD's across breeds. Breed averages vary among breeds and when the base was established. Here is a link to their work: https://beefimprovement.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/19_ABEPDpressreleaseandfactsheet.pdf

    New Hereford Bulls

They also used to say that all Charolais were cow killers. The polled cattle in all breeds are so much better than they were 50 years ago that the old adage just doesn't hold true anymore.

Had an interesting discussion with a retired dairy farmer from central valley of Cal.

You nailed it. With sexed semen only the better cows will have dairy heifers, the rest will be bred to beef bulls.
