    Modern Conveniences

What's one modern convenience you couldn't live without? If you only had one to keep and all others would disappear which one would you want? I'd keep indoor plumbing. I could live as a hunter/gatherer eating berries and bark as long as my cave had a toilet and shower.

    Help settle an arguement

At dinner time today my family and I were watching "Terminator 2" when a debate came up. I say that if the Terminator hadn't gone back to the past in the first movie, they wouldn't have had the pieces in the second movie, and thus they wouldn't have had the technology to make the terminators in...

    Modern Conveniences

If you only had to choose one modern convenience to have, what would it be? For me, I'd couldn't live without indoor plumbing.

    Swine Flu

1000 cases in Mexico City isn't a lot of people, but it's the dramatic jump in cases in such a short time. I work for a large swine producer and they strongly recommend that all field staff gets a flu shot every year. Humans can contract flu from swine and vice versa through normal contact...

    Random Thought

No way dude, getting inside a full grain bin isn't my cup of tea and I don't condone that type of behavior. Don't tell me you've never had a thought that was waaaaaay out there, come on, we all have.

First time land owner needs advice..

Call the neighbor and see what he has to say. More than likely you'll have to build it yourself.

    Random Thought

I was driving home from work today and was going past some grain bins when I had a random thought: It's well known that you're not supposed to go into a grain bin when grain is flowing because it acts just like quicksand and will suck you down. I wonder if anyone has ever tried to wear...

    Blizzard

Yep, the next day is spent digging out. My wife and I are fortunate enough to be able to work from home if we have too doing paperwork, purchase req's, goal reviews, etc. The day after the blizzard I woke up to do chores in air temp of -25 and a windchill of -45. That lasted all week and...

    Blizzard

We are in a blizzard right now, literally. When I got up this morning it was snowing to beat the band and the wind was about 25 mph which wasn't bad, only slight drifting across the road. Had to go to work this morning to get a barn ready for pigs, but got home before noon. Now it's really...

    Horse or 4-wheeler

We've never had bulls be aggressive to our horses, but we've had them not pay any attention to them. With those bulls we'd just concentrate on moving the cows and he'd always come trailing behind his ladies. We've also had bulls that were terrified of the horses when unloaded and one even got...

    Horse or 4-wheeler

I have to chuckle when people say they work cattle on foot, don't take it personally though. When my wife and I first started dating we were helping her folks move cows out of the lot to the chute to be vacc'd, K-Mar tagged, and poured to go out to pasture. We were on horses and her father and...

    Horse or 4-wheeler

Tell you what, I got a kick out of all of the reply's about this post because everyone has such different reasons for their choice. We don't doctor off of our horses but we teach them not to be afraid of the rope. I use a rope quite a bit around the place and I have saddle bags to pack...

how much snow is too much?

We live in Emmet County and in the last week we've probably gotten 2 feet. The week before Christmas was all snow storms and over night we got ten inches. The ol' back is complaining to beat the band!

    Horse or 4-wheeler

Which one do y'all use for the majority of your farm or ranch chores? We use horses for everything and won't even consider getting a 4-wheeler.

    Rubber overboots

I have a pair of green rubber knee boots by Northland, I think, and a yellow pair I got out of QC Supply but don't know the brandname. I've had the green pair for years and used them to pour concrete for years as well as farm chores. They've held up great!

    Enough

We don't have fire ants up here, but I well remember my time in the service down in the SE U.S. where we'd be doing PT and those little buggers would bite your hands and get up your shirt and work their way under your socks!

    Caution: Cattle loose on road.

I hate cows out. If I know the people who may own the cattle, I'll just call them up no big deal. This sounds like a problem that's not being addressed. Obviously the people who own the cattle don't give a hoot they are out, either call the authorities and file a complaint.

    Another ethanol stink abrewing

I'm glad I'm not the only person who thinks ethanol made from corn is a disaster waiting to happen. In the production of ethanol from corn it takes 1 unit of petroleum to make only 1.5 units of ethanol. Plus it takes thousands of gallons of water, when a facility is in the planning stage that...
