    Weaning naturally

So I just have to say that this has been a valuable string of replies... for what was really a hypothetical question. Y’all are awesome and the knowledge/experience shared here is why I come to this site in the first place. Really cool, thank you.

    Weaning naturally

Just want to add I especially appreciate the total cost of ownership/profit per acre comments... in that one calf out of 40 or so who refuses to respect the existing fences/cattle guards etc - doesn’t justify a huge investment in time/dollars to keep it separated. I understand all the risks...

    Weaning naturally

Thanks everyone for such good input/opinions/practices... exactly what I was wondering when I posed the question. Of course I expected the “just build better fences” replies, and yeah I’m working on it... but this one calf making his way across a clean cattle guard got me thinking/wondering...

    Weaning naturally

Yeah, she’ll be on a trailer eventually thanks. I’m not keeping any that don’t respect fences, etc... Guess my question is more of a “what if” scenario where calves don’t get weaned in time for the next delivery... would the cow have instincts enough to wean it herself. Just curious of other...

    Weaning naturally

Thanks for the replies! And yeah, I try to separate them at 8 or 9 months at the latest, but occasionally one will find its way back to the momma... through electric fencing or crossing a cattle guard. Some are just so determined, and once they escape once, my experience is they’ll do again...

    Weaning naturally

Hi, Anyone leave it up to the cow on when to wean the calf? Certainly not my plan, just curious if a cow would eventually wean the calf in time for the next delivery. Occasionally I’ll have one that is an escape artist and will get back with the herd... yesterday saw it carefully crossing a...

    Colostrum production?

    Great information, thanks Lucky!

    Colostrum production?

Thanks Jan, I'm pretty sure that would have been the case here. I usually wean at 7 months or so, sometimes earlier if the cow looks like she needs a break - just couldn't do it with this pair though. So not to kick a dead horse or ask stupid questions... this problem seems to be solved, but...

    Colostrum production?

Yeah TC, I could imagine that happening as well. This is an older cow bought at the barn - and this is the first calf she's had in my property though. She sure never got out of eyesight of it the last 10 months so glad I got them separated. She's in with the heifers now so all should be good...

    Colostrum production?

Interesting, thanks Ken. Would seem nature would take over at some point, but I'd rather not take those chances. Appreciate the feedback.

    Colostrum production?

Thanks KT. That's what I was thinking/hoping - that a month should be long enough. This pair is an odd couple that really never joined the herd - so hasn't been easy to get them penned. Thought for a while I'd just let them be and when it came time for the momma to have the next calf she...

    Colostrum production?

I'm curious at what stage a cow's colostrum is produced for the new calf. Reason for asking is that I have one cow with a calf that are real loners and never came to the pens so I could properly wean. Finally got them separated last weekend (calf is 10 months old and was still nursing). I...

Advice Request - Is this Retained Placenta?

I really appreciate the replies and advice - particularly from ya'll who have experienced this before. As of this evening - going on day 4 since the calf was delivered, it kinda still looks the same, and I'm really hoping this situation just clears itself up as I'd rather not intervene. Seems...

Advice Request - Is this Retained Placenta?

Hi, all. I've read several threads on RPs and understand the points of view regarding letting them be (for a while) and/or cleaning them out and giving antibiotics. My question is first if this is even an RP - or something else that might require intervention. The cow delivered a nice calf...

    When a calf dies...

Thanks Deepsouth, and I'm not sure at all what got it - or if it was already dead. I've had two other calves dropped and doing fine in the last month... this is the only one that I've lost, but I'm on the lookout for anything that needs to be appropriately dealt with. I've heard coyotes in the...

    When a calf dies...

Thanks, that's what I figured. It was a dumb question, I'm sure... but just not happy about losing the calf. I'm not sure if it was dropped dead, or killed by coyotes last night... I'm hoping that they aren't so bad here to go after a living calf. Anyway - I guess the cow will be fine and...

    When a calf dies...

Is there anything to do with the mother cow to stop milk production - or I assume this will happen naturally, and how long does that usually take? It looks like a predator got to a newborn calf in the last 24 hours and cow is still hanging around it with very full udders. Just wondering if...

    Unattended Calf

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it. When I picked up the calf last night the momma was far out of sight. The calf didn't fight until I got her close to the barn and had plenty of energy at that time. This morning they are together and there was some kicking -but the calf seems to have...

    Unattended Calf

Hello, I have a heifer who gave her first calf a few days ago and both seem to be healthy. Today though I notice that the calf is being left on her own a lot and kicked away when trying to nurse. She is peeing, etc... so I guess she's getting some milk - but I don't see her getting much. The...
