    Calving ease

Not what I meant. There is a current timing assumption included in the answer, and the data says straight bred matings on average will give you a lower weaning percentage and a lower weaning wt. per cow exposed than X bred matings. There also an assumption that you are actually trying to make...

    Calving ease

OK, I will take the bait: A 50 pounds WW reduction is unlikely. Perhaps 35 pounds. So without getting into when you wean and a lower VOG - - 20x35=700 herd WW less, but you may lose one dumb calf from using a power bull that sires square calves, and so it is about a wash... Problem with lower...

Summer/Fall Calving in Snow Country ?

Capacity is great. Multiple calving seasons is good. The issue is the cost vs. quality of local feeds that can make it all work financially. Stored roughage here currently ranges from U$S 70 to 155 per ton DM. Last year it was about double that. I am getting a real education on wintering cows...

Summer/Fall Calving in Snow Country ?

Was using some higher weaning wt. genetics for a while, but then had problems with spring calving heifer breed back... I am sure fall calving would make breed back worse.

Summer/Fall Calving in Snow Country ?

I think hay consumption has a lot to do with hay quality. I know I "save" a lot when I feed my neighbors wild meadow hay. Did NDSU have poor hay and high spring stocker prices?

Summer/Fall Calving in Snow Country ?

Bought a couple winter calving heifers as part of my get rich in 2023 strategery. Have live calves with ears but they were not growing... It is still deep winter here. Have now set up a creep area for them.

Third failed AI... Fat cow... now what?

Thanks Jan. I have been using some "easy fleshing" genetics, and my bred heifers have been getting fatter while some of their calves are getting smaller. Less milk is part of the equation. I need to adjust feed.

Third failed AI... Fat cow... now what?

I thought this was only true before the heifers start to cycle?

Third failed AI... Fat cow... now what?

What are your goals with this cow?

    Resting bulls

Sounds like they are resting now? If there is a concern, I would consider rotating the bulls rather than putting out all three at once.

Summer/Fall Calving in Snow Country ?

Aaron' plan is calving May and August for 30 to 40 days each. He said many that have a "fall" herd got started due to a bad bull. If you feed August calvers just grass hay -- to you see any problems?

Summer/Fall Calving in Snow Country ?

I provide wind breaks in the winter. Are the 600# April feeders going back to grass?

Summer/Fall Calving in Snow Country ?

Conventional wisdom is that fall calving cows here require a lot more stored feed and lose money. Probably true for most. We are doing a better job grazing, which in recent years has stretched into December. So the August calves would be 4 months old before they went on 100% cow hay along with...

    Pregnant yearling heifer

if we cannot comfortably tag a newborn, the cow goes on the must cull list. No two strikes for that kind. Had a heifer come out of the AI chute this summer and swerve to bump me. I got the message, and she got a trailer ride to the feedlot. Life is too short.

Real Men Pull the Calf and the Cow !

We use the Minnesota Hills calving system, so Lucky is behind the herd movement, but Mom keeps coming back and licking him. He is our cleanest calf now. Today he learned today how to hop and tried to follow Mom, but he cannot make it up steep grades. So I carried him over the hill and thru the gate.

Real Men Pull the Calf and the Cow !

Because a dry ish hillside beats mud. Some years we have a nice April. Once in a while we get a blizzard. Other question is why calve at that time of year? I am moving back a couple weeks into May for 2023.

Real Men Pull the Calf and the Cow !

Some cows like a lot of space for privacy and hiding their calf. Heifers even more so. In an open lot or paddock during the spring - - low areas or standing water often provide the most privacy. The problem is we calve during the wet on open hillsides that border moving water, and newborn...

Real Men Pull the Calf and the Cow !

I think you are right. I cannot find a break. Lucky got up today on his own, but he is not moving more than one or two hobbling steps, How did yours turn out?

Real Men Pull the Calf and the Cow !

"Lucky" has not nursed yet this morning so he got a second bottle. I helped him up afterwards and he only stands on three legs - - one front leg just hangs there with no weight on it. I suppose he got injured during all the thrashing when his mom was stuck in the hole. Any tips from here?
