Yes-- it's very fine-- I was planning on wearing a mask, but thank you! I plan on mixing it with compost before spreading it, as it is extremely light. susie

    Phosphorus source-- fire extinguisher material??

I found an ad on my local Craigslist for a soil enhancer-- It's the stuff that comes out of certain fire extinguishers- it's called ABC dry--chem. It is 95 percent MAP mono ammonium phosphate which is a moderate source of nitrogen and a high source of phosophorus it's analysis is 11-52-0 The...

    Soil test results

The nitrogen recommendation is just a guideline based on the crop I specified ( grass) I found that on the report in the fine print. I'm going to focus on adding phosphorus and sulfur first and maybe add a moderate amount of N. I see that Bone meal is a good source of phosphorus-- but...

    Soil test results

Hi- I actually have a lot of clover in my fields- i have overseeded some areas in clover quite a few years ago. Does the soil test take into account the amount of clover I might have? The grass is pretty much what was naturally growing before I got here, which I don't know what it is. Last...

    Soil test results

I just got the results of my soil test and I wondered I could get some help with getting the right fertilizer. They recommend 160 lbs Nitrogen, 70 lbs of Phosphate, and 10 pounds of sulfur per acre- i only have about 3 1/2 acres of pasture. I have a couple small cows and a few goats on...

Here's a link I found that talks about comparing lime-- http://hubcap.clemson.edu/~blpprt/acid4.html Susie

    Dolomitic or Calcitic Lime

I don't think calcitic lime is 100 percent lime- I believe both the calcitic and dolomitic are around 30 percent calcium. You'd have to check the bags though. I use calcitic, it is cheaper here. Susie

    Overseeding rate

Well, I might not spread it all this Fall , and I'll have it on hand. Around here at the feed store, comparable seed is 45 $ for 25 lbs. Susie

    Dolomitic or Calcitic Lime

I would think whatever's cheapest, then if you need to add magnesium put out some epsom salts. Susie

    Overseeding rate

Wow! :o I paid 55 dollars for 50 pounds of Orchardgrass, endophyte-free fescue and ryegrass . I bought 200 pounds thinking I'd overseed at about 50 lbs/acre. or slightly more (only have 4 1/4 acres total property, about 3 and something in pasture) Susie

    Sunflower planting

Not much usable "Discussion". More like an argument board. Some folks consider wheat a weed. I know I don't want it in my pastures. It gives an off taste to the beef. what kind of an off flavor? I had a friend that raised a pig on wheat- it was nasty tasting. I hadn't heard that it makes...

    Overseeding rate

Just got a reply from the conservation district- they said 50 pounds/acre when overseeding. So I guess I'll go with that. Duh< I guess I should have thought to ask them that-- I didn't figure they'd answer on a Sunday tho-- getting the seed later on today. Thanks for the replies! Susie

    Overseeding rate

The seed is already mixed, not sure of the ratio of what to what, it's about half price of what the stores carry it for. A guy who goes down to Oregon and picks up bads of seed by the truckload, has it specially mixed to what the conservation district in our area recommends. I'm kicking...

    Overseeding rate

I'm going to overseed a mix of Orchardgrass, tall fescue and tetraploid annual rye into my pastures this Fall, but I'm going to buy the seed soon. Just wondering how much I seed I should buy/ acre-- I'm going to broadcast spread it after grazing it short and roughing it up a little with...

    Sprayer for fertilizing

Don't ya hate that!! Well, I am not worried about us getting taken advatage of :) Hubby's boss has smaller acreage than we do... but we went shopping yesterday and checked prices, etc. Basically DH decided that we really wouldn't use on that much ( basically what I though too, but things are...

    Sprayer for fertilizing

My husband's boss wants to go in halves on a small sprayer for fertilizing our pastures. We haven't ever fertilized our pastures, we've had cows for just a couple of years, and have only 4 1/2 acres, we rotationally graze them. We did have a bunch of scotch broom in one of the pastures, and the...

    Overseeded pasture

I plan on growing something next year-- this year I've been giving them pumpkins from local growers-------- they love 'em! I know a gentleman who grew Mangelwortz (sp) for his cattle-- ( Stock beets) Is there a specific variety of turnips that is best for feeding? I enjoy giving them...
