    planting oats for hay

Be aware that oats are one of the grains most likely to be damaged by freeze. We lost many a field of oats here. We now use rye, wheat and ryegrass.

    Dun

i put the high skid shoes on my JD (kuhn). It does enable me to cut higher. Downfall is that because the blades are more level than aiming down, the cut is not as clean.

    mow or not

I don't know what type of grass it is, but coastal will hold it's protein quite a while. As a matter of fact the Noble Foundation and others recommend stockpiling grass and then feeding it through the winter months vs hay. No labor, baling, hauling or storage costs...........

Pro's and Con's of Liquid Fertilizer

Liquid will rust your equipment. If you apply it at warm temps, part will volatilize and dissapear. Best to use it in spring only.

    Nutrition values of native grasses

The OP wasn't asking about warm season v.s. cool season. As far as I know nearly everyone knows that cool seasons forages and legumes are higher in quality that warm season. As far as unfertilized bermuda, its equivalent to native. Around here no one fertilizes prarie hay (native grass) as it...

Ryegrass & Durana, no access to no-till

Yes ryegrass will germinate on top of the ground but if it doesn't rain every few days it will die before it makes a root system. I have wasted quite a few lbs of expensive seed over the years before I figured that out. Just scratch the ground with a disc harrow. You will notice that the seed...

    Lightbar guidance

I have had a Centerline 220 for about a year. I use it for applying liquid and granular fertilzer, spraying and seeding. Works very good. A whole lot better than a foam marker to me. If you are just dropping one line of foam at the tractor you still have to guess where the next swath is. My gps...

    Question: Arrowleaf (ball) Clover

Good arrowleaf should be 18-20% but all of my has all ready bloomed therefore protein probably has dropped way off. You will need either a crimper or hope for 3 or 4 days of 90 degree weather to get it dry

    Grazon

The dicamba in Grazon does have a residual effect. It is worth the extra money. My only warning, don't spray any pastures that you want to plant clover in because the dicamba will stay in the soil for up to a year and kill it.

baler man buried the tractor an baler

My first John Deere round baler cost me $11,000 (4x4). We baled approx. 500 bales per year and had it for 10 years, total of 5000 bales. We traded the baler in and got $6000 for it. So for these bales we had $1.00 per bale in them for the baler expense (machinery only). We had no mechanical...

I thought that you would apply the N when the Tifton was sprigged so that the sprigs would grow fast. Are you going to use the Cimmaron to kill other grasses and weeds before you fertilize the Tifton?

    Hay baling price poll

There seems to be a wide range of pricing going on for hay harvesting. I would like some posts showing prices in your area. Kind of like this: 4x5 rounds, JD net wrap: $18.00 bale, includes, cutting, raking and baling, southern OK Thanks P.S. I know that there is a thread below that relates...

    Soil sampling with power drill

In my clay soils, I can drill 2 holes before the battery runs down. Since I only have 2 batteries, I am out of luck since they recommend about 15 samples per field
