    Heifers eating oat seedheads?

Is this a problem? I have some heifers in the neighborhood of 700 lbs, cleaning up ryegrass/oat pasture. I noticed today they are pretty much only consuming the mature oat seadheads. Trying to get reseeding going on this pasture. Manure texture and color very different than before. Do i have to...

Separating Young 6 weight Steers and Heifers?

My bulls were banded on Feb 20th. Three weeks later i put them back with the heifers. Still a lot of riding and following around which is not good for weight gain, so i separated them again. This complicates my forage rotation of course. Will they need to stay separated?

    Implant Location?

Had the vet out last week. First time i have used implants. He said he prefered to put the implant toward the top of the ear. Everything i read says the middle is the best location. We put the tag in the middle, would that be the reason?

    Mineralization of Potassium?

From OSU: All applications of K should wait until the plants can utilize it better. If we were to look at soil levels of potassium during the year we would find that it is in greater concentration during the spring (due to mineralization of K during the winter. Plants have the ability to take up...

    Keeping cows off hydrant?

Just put a couple hydrants in and the installer (idot) left the hydrant a couple feet off the fence post. Thinking about adding a couple post beside hydrant and wrapping it in barbed wire. Any better ideas out there?

    Green streaks in winter annuals

So as I ride by the rye field I notice a recurring pattern of light green and dark green forage streaks. Seems each streak is about 3 feet wide. Looks like a football field when each 5 yards was mowed in a different direction. This field was fallow/weeds in the summer. I mowed the tall weeds...

http://www.dlfis.com/Forage/Species_and ... ister.aspx Anyone had any experience with this grass - Persister Prairie Brome. I am looking for an alternative to annual ryegrass requiring annual reseeding and tillage for a stocker operation. On some of my pasture I have winter annuals and...

    Temp High Tensile Fence.

What do you think about this idea? I have an area where I rotate my garden around in, which requires a temporary perimeter electric fence. I keep worrying about the cows getting out (especially when they salivate over the sweet corn) - so I decided to try a hot high tensile single strand with...

    Critique my stocker system

This is first time I have tried holding calves through the winter. 500-600 lbs. I have about 1 acre of winter annuals, mostly rye, per calf now. The rye is well established but growing slowly now. The rye is crossed fenced for 7 rotations. I have low quality hay with insufficient protein for...
