Welcome to our world May 15, 2009

This is what it looked like at my place this morning. This is about 60 miles south of RR's place So when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Zach had school canceled, so after feeding my orphan calf we made a snowman I may need to rethink my plans of sending the girls on their summer...

Somehow I can see this actually happening

Shamelessly stolen from another site  A father walks into a restaurant with his young son. He gives the young boy 3 nickels to play with to keep him occupied. Suddenly, the boy starts choking, going blue in the face. The father realizes the boy has swallowed the nickels and starts...

    Cattle drinking urine

Up here cows start drinking the brown water as soon as the snow starts to melt and create it. Only side effect I see is that it REALLY loosens their stool up. I was correcting a malpresentation this AM and the cow was trying to teach me a different meaning of the phrase "getting an ear full"...

Did someone ask for calf pics?

Here's some pics I took today. FEELING GOOD! YEEHAAA! In this picture the cows are heading to the feed bunk for pellets. Gets them out of the way while I put bales in the rings. Here's a picture of my son Zach with a Lego Bulldozer he got a while back. The instruction book...

    Getting Married!! Advice Welcome

Since I'm in the middle of my second divorce you may question the value of any advice I may give. A friend did send me an email you may want to consider. The Journey of a Man When I was 14, I hoped that one day I would have a girlfriend. When I was 16 I got a girlfriend, but there was no...

    Calf transport box

I built this a number of years ago when I had a few cows that got a little too snotty when they calved. Those cows have long since gone to hamburger production, but I like the protection of the cage. Never can trust the mother of a newborn. I need this for cold weather calving. If a calf...

    That time again

I can't remember if it was here or another board, but I can recall a thread by a person in Texas wondering if a cab on his tractor was a worthwhile thing. Maybe in his area it was a valid concern, but without that quiet, HEATED cab, it wouldn't have made 15 minutes :D John

    That time again

Since the weather closed in it's time to start feeding the old girls! This is the latest I've ever gone without having to feed the cows. Might be something to be said for this early weaning. John

Ooooh, I Hate the CCIA Website!!!

Well RR, I’ve got about at third of the feed I need, but I’ve got a plan. I’ve already weaned the calves and sent them to a feed lot. The best ones will be sold in mid December at the Cook’s sale. With no calves on them, the cows need less feed. I’m going to pasture some uncut hayfields to...

Ooooh, I Hate the CCIA Website!!!

Ah, yes. Age verifying cattle on the CCIA website. When I use satellite high speed, it reacts at the same speed most sites do on dial up. One neighbor took hours to register a hand full of cows to get the age verified premium. I guess if you calculate it as a per hour return, it doesn't...

    ther is just no end...

In case anyone wonders WTF, here is an article from last Wednesday's Winnipeg Free Press. 'It's a desperate situation out there right now' SWAMPED hay fields are the final straw for an untold number of Interlake cattle producers who are planning to liquidate their cow herds this fall. Still...

    ther is just no end...

I know what you mean RR. Plenty wet down in our corner too. Don't worry, the freight assistance will save us  :help: I've got less than a third of the hay I need. I'm going to wean calves late September and put them in a semi-local feed lot and then put them on the Cooks sale in early...

    John Deere 4230

No trouble with the power steering on any of our tractors, other than the two 510's have Wally Armstrong Power Steering :D Rod (DiamondSCattleCo), I'm surprised your neighbor has had trouble with that transmission. All it is, is the old 4020 transmission with a hydraulic hi/lo in front. They...

To Buy New or Used Baler

Lots of bargains out there on all used equipment. You need to have time to look and the ability to spot potential problems in a machine. I don't know what your financial situation is, but for me a new baler would be hard to justify for 300 bales a year. John

    John Deere 4230

Bill FWIW I own a 4230 that I bought for haying and hauling hay. I really like it. I paid $12000 CDN three years ago, but it looks rough, but Mechanically it is pretty sound. Mine is a very early model, 73 production and has 10,000 hours on the clock. I replaced the original seat with a...

    Round Bale Transport

Up here bale carriers like this are common. One man can load, haul, and unload 12 bales without getting out of the cab. I lucked out and found this one used for $4500 CDN. John
