    stall display/dividers

I made a set out of 2x2's and hog panels. They lasted over 10 years,I rebuild them out of 1" square tubing and the same hog panels. I made them with the same angle and look as the sullivan panels then painted them, hog panels and all. They looked good enough for my kids to win Herdsmanship a time...

    Jr shows

I understand and agree with what you are saying. I simply think that sometimes the purpose of the Jr. shows sometimes gets cloaded by $ figures. I do not want to limit success of breeders or juniors. I do feel that there is a way to balance winning and learning. The problem I have found is the...

    wormer pour on ?

If you are going to use a pour on, I would use name brands. I have seen some data that indicates the generics do not give you the results. One trial showed almost a pound per day difference in feeder cattle. Did it make up for the cost difference?-I don't know.

Swelling under the jaw in a calf....

When I first started breaking calves, years ago,I would let them drag a rope for a week or so before I would try to work with them. i would get this swelling and tenderness on almost every calf. I have learned that I can break them quicker, and without swelling, if I put the halter on the calf...

New Fair Grove Jr Livestock Show

The first one is under our belts now. I feel it was a success, had about 50 goats and over 60 head of cattle. All the kids seem to have had a good time. I don't think we had any complaints on the beef cattle show and the judge did a great job. We also heard no complaints about the...

FFA Project Heifer, Your Opinions Please!

I wonder about changing her feed to a heifer developer ration and up the amount. Talk with someone where you buy feed to see what they have available. I also think you should consider giving her some something like Probios or Fasttrack to help her rumen use the feed you put in her better. I...

New Fair Grove Jr Livestock Show

Does anyone have anything on premium sales? I have several reason I would like to try this type of sale. Our show is very early in the year, in our part of the country. County shows around us are restricting sales and just allowing youth from their counties to sell. It would allow people and...

    Jr shows

I think that doing your best and giving 100% is a great thing. However, I think some people go a little to far. As I stated in an earlier post. Jr. shows are about learning, not just about winning. Learning several life lessons. Things like responsiblity, giving 100% at all endeavers, helping...

    TJLA & Show numbers

I think it is high fuel and feed prices. Alot of people in our area are either cutting back on the number of shows they are going to attend or just are not going to show at all.

New Fair Grove Jr Livestock Show

We are having a Jr livestock show in Fair Grove,Mo on May 17th. We are open to suggestions about what you like and don't like about small(less than 100 hd) shows. This is our first year. Fair Grove hasn't had a show in several years. We are just going to have beef cattle and meat goats this...

    Jr shows

I don't want to give the wrong impression. I am glad that the club calf breeders are making some return on the years of investment they have. I think there is a way to balance realistic $ amounts for youth and still have the club calf guys make money. I guess what I was hoping to spark was ideas...

    Jr shows

I stand behind placing the steer in reserve. I placed a steer in the grand slot that was a high $ calf. I stated to the crowd that I could make a case for all the calves,in the championship drive,to be grand. I would not place him in reserve unless I thought he deserved to be there that day.

    Jr shows

I am a 4-H club leader and work with the local FFA chapter, have kids involved with both. I also have my own kids that show. I started judging shows last year and this was the first time I had really come away from a show with a bad feeling. The kids in our area are more involved with breeding...

    Jr shows

I recently judged a "jr" heifer and prospect steer show. I guess I was taken back a bit when my ringman started telling what these people had given for these calves. Some of the "kids" had multiple five figure calves in their trailers. He also started telling me how some of the parents would...

    Options to Sale Barn?

I have had great succcess Selling calves from the local newspaper.I sold mostly lightweights(300 lbs and under),but had several people interested in bigger calves. Most of the time I sold 1-2 hd. per buyer. Sold over 200 hd in less than 7 months that way.

Placenta: Bon Appe'tit or Heave HO?

If I'm in the position to do so,I remove it. I have had one get choked on it,but that doesn't concern me too much. The rumen is a wonderful thing, but it can't digest that stuff very well at all. It pretty much rots more than it is digested and used.

    Swollen Throat Area

    What do you think ?

I think she's piggy. I would give a shot of Lutalyse and hang on to her for a month or so. If she's bred that will take care of that problem.I would put a little weight on her and then sent her to town. I wouldn't send her back to the sale before I got that calf out of her. Nobody else wants a...
